Interesting article, thanks for posting. I always thought it was mostly about Gorbachev slowly relaxing the party's grip on everything with some necessary and long overdue reforms, the results of which got out of control. This of course could only happen because Gorbachev was not as ruthless as many of his predecessors, as the article points out. Someone like Stalin could have stopped any cultural revolution I think.
