North Texas added a transfer on Thursday who new head coach Dan McCarney believes could be a key part of the foundation for a brighter future for the program.
Cam Feldt, a former Pilot Point standout who spent the first year of his college career as a redshirt at Arkansas, has enrolled at UNT and begun working out with the team.
Feldt was ranked 28th on Rivals.com’s list of the top offensive tackles in the Class of 2010 and also was selected to play in the 2010 Under Armour All-America game.
Feldt, who was not available for comment, will sit out the upcoming season at UNT and then have three years of eligibility remaining.
“He’s tremendous prospect,” McCarney said. “We expect for him to challenge to be a three-year starter. … He’s definitely a Division I tackle and is very motivated. [UNT strength coach Frank Wintrich] has been very impressed with him.”
Feldt will be one of the top-rated prospects in recent history to play for the Mean Green — if he remains with the team through a year off and takes the field for UNT in 2012, when he could fill an immediate need.
Tackle Matt Tomlinson is among UNT’s best and most experienced linemen and will be a senior this fall. J.J. Johnson, who is projected to start at center or guard in 2011, is also a senior.
Converted defensive lineman Antonio Johnson is projected to start opposite Tomlinson at left tackle this fall as a redshirt freshman. Sophomore LaChris Anyiam and junior Ayodele Adedipe also are on UNT’s two-deep depth chart at tackle.
Anyiam is also a converted defensive lineman.
Feldt is a career offensive lineman who starred throughout his time at Pilot Point. The Bearcats won the state title in 2009, when Feldt posted 104 pancake blocks and did not allow a sack.
Baylor and Texas Tech also recruited Feldt while he was at Pilot Point, where he grew up in a family full of offensive linemen.
Cam Feldt’s father, Blake Feldt, lettered as an offensive lineman at Texas Tech from 1980-82 before entering the coaching profession.
Blake Feldt coached his son at Pilot Point and is now the head coach at Class 4A Buda Hays, where he coaches his son Boone Feldt, who is a highly rated center entering his senior season.
McCarney said he has known Blake Feldt for several years. That relationship helped UNT in the recruiting process once Cam Feldt elected to leave Arkansas.
“[Cam Feldt] is very impressive and comes from an athletic family,” McCarney said. “His dad was a good player. Cam’s athletic, can run and has good hips.”
The challenge Cam Feldt will face is getting back into game shape after sitting out two seasons.
That obstacle is one McCarney is confident Feldt can overcome after getting to know him over the last few weeks.
“We can’t get enough young men like him in our program now,” McCarney said. “I would love to have four more just like him.”
