I disagree. The University of Middle Tennessee sounds much better than Middle Tennessee State University. UMT or MT is much better than MTSU. Dropping "state" from the name is critical in my opinion. Memphis, North Texas, and Troy did not change theirs for no reason. Unfortunately, our president does not want to pursue the name change (I won't get into why) so we are stuck with what we have for now.
The problem with Middle Tennessee State is it makes you look like you're a subsidiary of Tennessee State University. Hope that gets through. I know how much you guys want to be just MIddle Tennessee.
I don't think many of us would mind it if we were "TSU", as long as they combined the U's and kept the main campus in Murfreesboro (along with the nickname).
But politics will never allow it to happen-- TSU is losing money hand over fist (and the money just seems to 'disappear'). Our state tax dollars at work.
We are experiencing the same situation, problem is it is ULM who is losing money hand over fists and they just happen to be in the Belt as well.

I've never thought that the name Middle Tennessee State University sounds like it has anything to do with Tennessee State University. It's not like we're Tennessee State @ Murfreesboro.
Do you think Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University sound like they're a subsidiary of the University of Michigan? Or Central Florida sounds like they're a subsidiary of University of Florida? Or University of Southern California sounds like their a subsidiary of Cal?

I don't think the prez is opposed to the change, he just doesn't have a leg to stand on (for various reasons).
Sadly, I don't think the Science Building is going to happen anytime soon. With the new govenor Bill Haslam (the former mayor of Knoxville and huge UT suppporter) our interest would be better served going after the name change as oppose to a building that cost millions of dollars. The science building has been at the top of the list for years now but somehow other projects seem to get funded that are listed below it i.e. Memphis getting the money to buy Lambuth.

Your looking at it through your own lense, from outsiders stand point it does sound like you are Tennessee State or a campus of Tennessee State.

You didn't answer my question, if to an outsider Middle Tennessee State University sounds like a Campus of Tennessee State University, how does University of Central Florida not sound like a branch of University of Florida? How Does Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan not sound like a campus of Michigan? How does University of North Texas not sound like a campus of University of Texas?
I really just don't think so. If we were Tennessee State University-Middle Tennessee or Tennessee State University-Murfreesboro I'd see your point, but I cannot think of a single example of a branch campus where the branch comes first. It's Auburn-Montgomery, not Montgomery-Auburn, it's LSU-Shreveport not Shreveport-LSU. Furthermore TSU is a small HBCU that plays FCS football. I doubt many people outside of Tennessee, or HBCU fans or OVC fans could tell you whether or not there is a Tennessee State University, where it is, or whether or not they sponsor NCAA sports.

If Middle Tennessee State University sounds like a subsidiary of Tennessee State University, how does University of Middle Tennessee not sound like a subsidiary of University of Tennessee?

I try to stay out of the MT name discussions. Just nothing but annoyance can come from it, but...
Its the combination of the direction and the state.
UCF, doesn't sound like a branch of UF, because there's no "state".
Central Florida State University would sound like a branch of Florida State University. Same if there were an Eastern Michigan State University. The direction sounds less like an individual area, and more like an area served by a branch campus.

I agree with you to a point, but Tennessee State doesn't have the name recognition that Florida State or Michigan State do. I think it would be a bigger issue for us if Tennessee State was a FBS program.

I don't agree with anything I typed there, btw.

RE: Muts: Is It Time For A Name Change ?
It's a name...get over it. Our name could be completely different and it wouldn't matter because the average bubba out there loves Tennessee and couldn't care less about any other school in the state. They win and against big teams every year. We don't. Start winning all your games and beating big names and winning bowl games and the bubbas will come out of the woodwork rooting for Middle Tenneessee State. People are shallow. It doesn't take much to sway them. Just win.
