If by "church" you mean Phelps and a handful of his inbred progeny, yeah, they're a disgrace. To America, to pretty much anything with opposable thumbs.

Somebody needs to put this on that Church Sign Generator website with a message like "Gays Welcome."

They are not a part of the church. Horrible people. But we are all sinners.

One could only hope an eternal protest march...in Hades.

Well, I could hope for a Tornado to hit the homes, the meeting places, the Chapel and any other real property of all the extended Phelps clan while they are out of town. This storm would cause nobody else any real problems, of course in my fantasy.

Now that would be poetic justice. It would also have nobody to blame.

Is the national guard out in Joplin? Maybe an enterprising squad could, ah, you know, persuade the clan to move along. If that failed, some strategically placed nails in tires could help deflate their passion a bit. With all that debris, lots of nails everywhere, you know.

No...I am against any type of violent solution. I submit that ostracism is a more punitive method. Treat them as if they do not exist. Do not trade with them. Do not speak to them. Leave them on an island created by themselves. These are foolish, ignorant people that do not deserve any effort being put forth on them.

Agreed. The worst thing you could do to these jackwagons is to ignore them.

All I can say is that they're about a week too late.

I don't know if the new, gender-sensitivity-trained cadets at The Citadel and VMI still do this or not, but in the good old days, those who had somehow given great offense to the rest of the corps would be given the Silent Treatment. In a "closed" community like that, the psychic pressure of being ignored by every other person around you can quickly become overwhelming, and -- as I have been told -- most of the young men subject to that punishment quickly crumbled and left of their own accord.

The comparison with the Phelps clan is a bit different, of course. I do think that all decent people should shun them and turn their back to them. But sometimes, that's just not enough. MileHighBronco suggested one of the alternatives, and I agree with it.

I think a more just farewell would be to have a bunch of San Francisco gays, in full San Francisco gay attire, attend his funeral. Boy George could speak, after that maybe Rosie, then maybe Barny Frank....the list could get quite long. When they're done lisping then you can pi55 on his grave. Piss twice even.
