West Florida to add Football
UWF voted to add football last week. They are a member of the Gulf South Conference.

May 11, 2011

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida Football Feasibility Committee will meet one final time on Wednesday, June 1 to finalize its recommendation to UWF President Judith Bense. The committee agreed unanimously to recommend football for the university in its meeting on Tuesday, and they will finalize the wording of the recommendation in the June 1 meeting, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the Alumni Room in Building 12 on the main UWF campus.

Yeah, with Stetson, Ave Marie and now UWF adding football, this now jumps starts FGCU and places much pressure on UNF to add Football.

10.) UNF
11.) FGCU

Do you think the University of Tampa will return to the field?

It says it was a recommendation, but it doesn't seem like it has been approved yet. At least I didn't see where it had been approved. Looks like that will happen on June 1.

I guess they recommend it to UWF trustee board. One thing to note is that Judy Bense is the older sister of Allan Bense who was the speaker of the Florida House. I don't see the trustee board rejecting the recommendation.

Allan Bense

He is a member of the following Boards and Councils:

Board Member - Gulf Power Company [ subsidiary of Southern Company ( SO; NYSE ) ]
Chairman of the Board - Florida Chamber of Commerce
Chairman of the Board - James Madison Institute ( Think Tank )
Past Chairman - Florida Council on Military Base & Mission Support
Past Chairman and current Board member - HCA Gulf Coast Hospital
Past Chairman - Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission
Past Vice Chairman and current Board Member - Enterprise Florida, Inc. ( The Governor is the honorary Chairman )
Board Member - Florida Council of 100
Bay County Economic Development Alliance

Aren't they Division II anyway? They would seem to be in an area already saturated by FBS.

Yes, They are in the Gulf South Confernce. There is no such thing as football saturation.

FBS schools closest to UWF, USA, Troy and FSU.

Mobile to Pensacola - 53 miles
Troy to Pensacola - 121 miles
Pensacola to Tallahassee - 175 miles

This is also helps Valdosta State (236 miles) get more exposure in the panhandle.

LOL! For me and you maybe not. (I watched about 20 bowl games last year)

But if the idea is that they would move eventually to FBS, I think they should stay Division II.

Let me clarify. UWF would be a nice FCS opponent for Troy, South Alabama and FSU in the future. UWF fans will travel for these close games.

Well the conference in 2013 will be

Delta State
New Orleans
North Alabama
West Georgia
West Florida
Valdosta State

and maybe UNC Pembroke.

They would definately see OOC FCS games against Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Florida A&M, Jacksonville State, Jackson State, Samford, Southeast Lousiana and Southern.

The home and home FCS games that would make money:

Delta State vs Jackson State

North Alabama vs Alabama A&M
North Alabama vs Samford
North Alabama vs Jacksonville State

Southeastern Louisiana vs New Orleans
Southern vs New Orleans

West Alabama vs. Alabama State

West Florida vs Florida A&M
West Florida vs Alabama State

Valdosta State vs Florida A&M

This would definately influence recruiting in the Southeast.

RE: West Florida to add Football
UWF has come up in some discussions regarding the Atlantic Sun, although the Southland might even take a look at them if they lose too many football members to the WAC.

Ironically, football would be UWF's 14th sport-the minimum for Division I. If UWF made the leap (27 additional football scholarships plus 27 for women's sports), adding 2 more sports would be a virtual certainty.

Lest we forget Jacksonville University Dolphins of the Division I-AA Pioneer League? Gotta throw them on the pile.

Do you really think West Florida has aspirations of moving up to Div. 1-AA anytime in the near future? Won't happen for years to come. It will take years of building an alumni and fanbase.

Or if the right circumstances make it necessary. FAU and FIU werent supposed to be in the FBS in 2005 but due to confrence shakeups a opening was provided even though neither school was really ready.

True. Based upon what I can infer from locals and alumni in the Tallahassee area is that they are want a football team but do not see FBS anytime soon. Their take reminds of the UCF alumni in the early 90's.

I can see UWF at DIV II for about four to five years before transitioning to FCS. Then I'll give it another 8 years before a move to FBS. Like you, I think UWF's alumni has to be in the neighborhood of 65,000 before they can contemplate FBS. The one thing is their favor is the large military bases in the area that they can draw a crowd from and potential students.

My point was that no Sun Belt team will play UWF if it does not move up to I-AA.

At some point all these start-ups have got to dilute the regional fan and donation bases.

I agree. UWF would have to be FCS in order to play Sun Belt teams.
How is it diluting the fan base if you are attracting your alumni and the local population around your university. Besides the U.S. population increases 3% every year.

The oldest, most established teams in each state won't be hurt much, but fans of regional programs such as FSU, USM, Troy, USA, FAU, FIU, etc. might be drawn to their own diploma schools, and some people who have no local college affiliation will have the opportunity to get involved with the new team, taking their time and money away from some of the other regional programs.

But if these newcomers stay in D-II and I-AA, I suppose fans will be able to have their bigtime team and local team to officially support. Programs like Troy are still trying to get their alumni to drop that dual affiliation, even many years after the I-A plunge.
