Temple to the Sun Belt?
Found this on the LaTech board while getting my entertainment for the day.

I wouldnt of put any thought to EXCEPT that it came from Dwayne From Minden, who seems to be one of the more "connected" and knoledgeable posters over there.

Heard an odd rumor that Temple is the football school Wright Waters is courting - NOT the red aggies from NMST....

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
Temple for football only makes about as much sense as NMSU for football only, aside from the fact that NMSU has Sun Belt ties.

That said it would be surprising if Temple went anywhere when they are holding out hope for a CUSA or Big East invite, combined with the recent UMASS announcement.

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
FWIW I agree.

I found it a very strange comment since its in the Northeast, and is not part of that "southern and warm" criteria. Perhaps simply smoke and mirrors?

Now let me ask you this, what if it was Temple in ALL sports?

How is there basketball program?

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
Found this on Kenpom on there basketball

Team Overall Conf Pomeroy AdjO AdjD AdjT Conf SOS
Temple 7 26-8 14-2 .8695 38 110.1 54 93.3 38 65.0 254 .5154 14

That would be a huge upgrade for Sun Belt basketball I would imagine.

Still dont think it would happen, but IF the 'Belt coudl pull Temple in for all sports would they break the "southern & warm" guideline?

Temple would NEVER join the SB because of basketball.

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
I thought the Sunbelt was expanding within its footprint? Also, for Temple it makes zero sense. People in the NE are not familiar with deep south schools any more than people here are with NE schools.

If there is any shred of truth to this rumor, we'd be giving them the same deal they have with the MAC right now, football only, keep all their other sports in the A10.

The only way this could happen is if there are t.v. dollars driving that bus. It would be a lateral move (maybe a little up if the contract is good) for them to an area of the country where they have little in common.

That said, WW says he's speaking with only FBS programs, and if we are taking him at his word, then La Tech and someone else would fit the bill. Just can't imagine Temple uprooting for a SE conference.

Then that would make no sense at all in my mind.

Temple football is not that strong, and WAY out of our footprint. The only way I could see an exception would be if the came "all in" which I tihnk we all agree woiuldt happen.

Also where did this "football only" thing come in? The Miami Herald article did not mention that at all. Just siad we are discussing a new member.

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
On its face, it makes no sense...but, neither did TCU to the Big East.

IF such a move was possible, then the only driving factor would have to be guaranteed tv dollars over a 15 year period. Also, there would HAVE to be a deal in place where Temple would guarantee the SBC a certain number of OOC basketball games per year, both home and away.

With respect to the tv dollars, it would have to be a deal where (1) we are compensated by adding a 12th team to balance out the league, (2) we were compensated for a conference championship game (played at the home stadium of the top rated team in the playoff), and (3) whoever had the media rights would compensate us for the right to carry select OOC football games on their broadcast media. Also, there would have to be separate compensation for internet broadcast (meaning, any games actually clicked on like an ESPN3.com and viewed for at least 20 consecutive minutes would trigger payments for the SBC).

RE: Temple to the Sun Belt?
I think it's a safe bet that since UMASS is going football only to the MAC that Temple is staying put.

What you guys don't know is just how tenuous Temple's football only membership was to the MAC.

It was very possible that the MAC could have voted them out if they didn't agree to some basketball games.

I think with the MAC getting some basketball games from UMASS in the deal and the even number of 14 now, the MAC is satisfied and Temple is staying put.

For those of you wondering why it was ever considered in the first place, Temple resides in the #4 TV market in the country. It would have boosted our TV deal some.

Who said the Belt won't last? I've never heard anyone say that.

That's generally sound advice, but sometimes "never" is a safe bet. I feel very comfortable saying that Temple will never join the Sun Belt Conference, but I'll qualify that to this extent: so long as the Belt consists of it's current 11 members (12 until Denver leaves), I have no doubt that Temple will not be the 12th member.

Not saying you said it just said I've heard it multiple times and it was proven to be wrong. I don't know why you are so sure about Temple. If they went to the MAC it's possible they go to the Sun Belt. I agree it's not likely but I wouldn't say "never."

Our Rome, Italy Campus might qualify as southern climate, however...

...Temple to Sun Belt is so unlikely that 'never' would be the best word to describe it.

Way out of footprint that Temple wants to be in. Temple to C-USA possible, because that is the 'Jump up to BCS' league in this part of the country, and that is Temple's aspiration. Whether they achieve it is another matter.

Go Owls (Temple, that is)!
