The more I think of it. We need a D-1 type coach with strong abilities, and guys that he can relate, teach, recruit and can win with whatever talent is available. I hope Dr. G's pick is good one. We cannot afford another 5 year plan.

Mann was let go at Dayton. Word is that perhaps two Michigan recruits Gibson and the runner up to Mr. Basketball out of Lansing may request releases from their LOIs at Dayton.

Here is the Bio for Rob Murphy who seems to be a very similar candidate as Cornell Mann:

Rob cut his teach in Detroit and at Kent State.

Syracuse is a bigtime program and although Murphy is a long shot, he could be the guy. Don't count out Stephens from MSU either. I believe both would accept the financials offerred whereas Licklighter who is still collecting $2.4 annyually from Iowa may not.

I think Murphy and Stephens would recruit well, especially in Michigan.

The selection process sounds like a chapshoot , will be glad when it's over and let the best man or best interview win. Would just likje to get on with it and start the new era.

Maybe Dennis remembers this but around '01 or '02 a number of programs were trying to get the 'hot' Detroit h.s. coaches who could rope in the recruits.

I remember there were maybe 3 and it now seems that Murphy was one.

Kent being a winning program landed him.

Those were the days when schools wanted a coach from Detroit PSL who could recruit the city and the city responded by helping the coach by supplying good recruits.

It was the 'job track': Detroit PSL coach --> asst coach (I-A) etc.

BTW, someone mentioned this to me. I didn't know it.

Tony Harvey is related to Stephanie Harvey-Vanderburg, I believe a former EMU women's athletics administrator.

I was told but forget the relationship.

But as Tony isn't a candidate this post is pretty much moot.

Small world.

You are correct.

Just a quick reminder of what people were thinking/speculating/hoping for 10 years ago. Murphy’s name was a late addition to the list.

The other thing I’ll add is that I miss Dennis.

He was not mentioned by anyone on this board until late in the search.
It would be like a new name surfacing, let’s say.... today....
