I dunno, I agree that an atheist, Buddhist, etc, aren't exactly openly free n' safe among the Islamists. But nothing gets people worked up like "Christians".
In the center-left collectivist worldview: Christians are perceived as oppressors who have colonized and profited, and now basically represent the hated American SUV-driving Fox-watching South. Sharing this collective label, Christians in the Middle East aren't going to get much sympathy, unfortunately. "Christians" ain't high on the Politically Correct Social Cause list.
If you are skeptical of this, I'd suggest posting the same article on Democratic Underground, DailyKos or HuffPost, and then read the comments section.
FWIW, my foreign policy view still stands as always. Aside from offering political asylum, I'm not one to support any sort of sticking-our-nose into these countries in order to "fix" the problem.
