Last of the Anti-Abortion Liberals
Sarge Shriver died about a month ago at age 95. He was a very famous man in American politics for most of the 60s and 70s -- it sometimes seemed that everyone connected to the Kennedys was very famous in those days -- although I guess most younger people today probably said "Who?" when his death was announced. Here is an affectionate tribute by one his fellow-Catholics: http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2...-his-times

Barring some sort of miraculous political transformation within the Democrat Party, Shriver will probably go down in history as the last Democrat nominee on the national ticket (for vice president, with McGovern) to be explicitly opposed to most legal abortions.

1st and foremost I am against abortion BUT overturning Roe vs Wade does NOT make abortion illegal, it returns the decision to the states. So the poor in Mississippi (where only 1 abortion clinic operates state wide) would be forced to travel to Illinois, New York and other "progressive" states or go the back alley route.

50 million abortion since Roe v Wade. It created an abortion cottage industry. Death for profit. Cannot be justified in it's present form. The Unborn is a class that has no rights.

PeaWee a closet Republican. Go figure.

RE: Last of the Anti-Abortion Liberals
“While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized—the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old.

“On the question of the individual’s freedom of choice there are easily available birth control methods and information which women may employ to prevent or postpone pregnancy. But once life has begun, no matter at what stage of growth, it is my belief that termination should not be decided merely by desire.

“When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family, and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception.”

All quotes from Ted Kennedy in 1971.

Ted Kennedy switched his position to anti-Life in the lead up to his 1980 primary campaign against Jimmy Carter to attract big donations from the abortion industry. The rest of the Kennedy's and most pro-life Democrats soon followed suit with a few notable holdouts. The issue reached it's low point in 1992 when Gov. Bob Casey was refused a speaking slot at the Dem National Convention on the sole basis of his pro-life position.

Since then the pendulum has begun to swing back in the other direction with the emergence of organizations like Democrats for Life of America
It was after all the pro-life house Democrats that were able to initially pass the Stupak–Pitts Amendment that held up Obamacare for months and eventually to the Presidential executive order that banned funding for abortion. I think there are still a lot of pro-life Dems among rank and file Democratic voters and public opinion polls showing more and more Americans as pro-life will lead to even greater numbers of pro-life Dem candidates.

Has there every been an HONEST study of the reality of back alley, rusty hanger abortions?

Because frankly, I don't believe they were ever prevalent. They are simply trotted out as an abortion boogey man.

That is probably true.
Quote:public opinion polls showing more and more Americans as pro-life will lead to even greater numbers of pro-life Dem candidates.
I think that is probably true in the deep "Red" states and districts, but -- by and by -- I think the Democrats are a long, long ways off from nominating pro-life candidates in the states where Democrats are strongest, and the same goes for their national ticket nominees of P and VP. Like I say, Shriver was the last one to be explicitly pro-life (1972) and that was 39 years ago. I have a hunch it will be at least 39 more years before the Democrats nominate another pro-lifer for P or VP, but we'll see. That's one prediction where I would be happy to be proven wrong.

I am a recovering conservative. I voted for Reagan twice, Daddy Bush twice, Bob Dole, Pat Buchannan, W (the 1st time) and even Alan Keyes. I was a single issue anti abortion voter UNTIL we invaded Iraq without cause. It became clear the CONservatives were using social issues like abortion and gay marriage as smoke screens to run roughshod over the Constitution.

You make no sense. "A single issue anti abortion voter UNTIL we invaded Iraq"? How does invading Iraq turn you to the murder babies "as long as it's safe and rare" camp?

How does one go from being a conservative to being in the end-zone on the left over one issue?

Most conservatives have disagreements with politicians and parties. And we say so. We campaign and vote for those closest to our own views. How do you justify selling your soul and throwing out all you believe in and joining a discussion board to espouse far left views?

Please don't tell me you believe that ****. I've heard that one thousands of times. They think it lends credibility to their argument.
