RE: "Nobody gets married anymore"
we can sit here and blame teachers and schools for the problems with America's youth, but i believe the majority of the blame can be attributed to the demise of the traditional American family.

RE: "Nobody gets married anymore"
Quote:Within my lifetime, single parenthood has been transformed from shame to saintliness. In our society, perversely, we celebrate the unwed mother as a heroic figure, like a fireman or a police officer. During the last presidential election, much was made of Obama’s mother, who was a single parent. Movie stars and pop singers flaunt their daddy-less babies like fishing trophies.
If that doesn't raise your blood pressure, I don't know what will. And the answer to why this happens is here:
Quote:Connecticut is among the most generous of the states to out-of-wedlock mothers. Teenage girls like Nicole qualify for a vast array of welfare benefits from the state and federal governments: medical coverage when they become pregnant (called “Healthy Start”); later, medical insurance for the family (“Husky”); child care (“Care 4 Kids”); Section 8 housing subsidies; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; cash assistance. If you need to get to an appointment, state-sponsored dial-a-ride is available. If that appointment is college-related, no sweat: education grants for single mothers are available, too. Nicole didn’t have to worry about finishing the school year; the state sent a $35-an-hour tutor directly to her home halfway into her final trimester and for six weeks after the baby arrived.
Having a baby is easier, and more lucrative, THAN HOLDING DOWN A ******* JOB!
Quote:The safety net has become a hammock.
The writer seems like a good guy.

Governmental welfare at ALL levels does nothing but act as an incentive for the very conditions it tries to treat with it's programs. The welfare state enslaves those that it serves.

I think an even wider description is just a lack of accountability in this country. Hollywood stars get community service for crashing a car while driving drunk, fathers aren't held responsible for raising children, poor teachers are sheltered by unions, car companies are given bailouts, students aren't graded with red ink because it will hurt their feelings, Charles Rangel gets convicted of 11 counts of basically being a lying, sleezebag and gets a slap on the wrist. It manifests itself all over the place in different forms, but people no longer feel they are responsible for the poor choices they make, and we don't make them suffer the repercussions.

I would agree with both assertions.

did politicians or celebrities ever really get more than a slap on the wrist?

Oh, BTW that was a great article and it is great reading about a teacher who was willing to give up what I would assume to be a very good career in Hollywood for a job that is much less glamorous, and devote so much energy to having a true impact on individuals.
