The following is a look at the staff hired by new North Texas head coach Dan McCarney:

Nick Quartaro, assistant head coach/wide receivers — Associate head coach at Kansas from 2002-06 was also the head coach at Drake (1986-88) and Fordham (1994-97). Worked with McCarney at Iowa State from 1998-2001.

Clint Bowen, defensive coordinator/safeties — Spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky and the previous four seasons in the same capacity at Kansas.

Justin Gaines, cornerbacks — Former Montana State assistant convinced 18 Texas players to sign with the Bobcats in the last three years. He ought to be able to recruit to UNT.

Mike Grant, running backs — Worked with McCarney from 1998-2006 at Iowa State and was the assistant head coach at Western Michigan last season.

Mike Nelson, defensive line — Was on McCarney’s staff at Iowa State from 1997-2006 and spent the last two seasons at UNT in the same capacity.

Mike Simmonds, offensive line — Played four seasons in the NFL and spent the 2007-09 seasons working with McCarney at South Florida, where he was the offensive line coach. Spent last season at Indiana State.

Kent Riddle, special teams/tight ends — Spent more than 10 years coaching special teams at the college level, including stints at Colorado and Boise State.

Anthony Weaver, linebackers — Former Notre Dame All-American played seven seasons in the NFL and worked with McCarney at Florida.
