Toledo has always traveled well to Bowl games. Whether it's been California, Orlando, Las Vegas, Mobile, etc. I actually had FIU fans come up to me at last year's game in Miami asking, where Toledo was and why did we have so fans at the game?. If you scroll down towards the bottom of the website page you can see some photos of the Rocket Jambulance, Blue Crew, and UT Marching Band in the Mobile Mardi Gras Parade.

RE: Buying tickets matter - FIU embarrassing sales
I've been MIA for a while, but I feel like I need to contribute to this thread from a current student's prospective.

1) This economy blows. A round trip flight to Detroit during the holidays, with hotel stay would cost a significant amount of money. Paying $500 to fly on a chartered jet with other FIUers is not something I would do. As a student, that's almost half of my fraternity's yearly dues alone. I'm sorry I live in Miami and the cost of living is much higher than in butt-fcked Egypt (it's a Miami expression), or any other SBC town.

2) To travel from Miami to Detroit, where it's expected to have a high of 19 degrees on Dec 26th, is ridiculous for any South Florida native. People wear scarves in 50 degree weather down here for Christ's sake. This is by far the worst possible destination in the bowl system. Not to mention it's DETROIT.

3) FIU still has a majority of commuter students. The average FIU student comes from very a conservative Hispanic background. My family would disown me if I did not spend Christmas with them.

4) Miami is a city of bandwagon fans. Yeah, our season might have been our best one yet (and at 6-6 that's not saying much), but until FIU starts winning consistently our fan base will still be small. The University of Miami, with its 5 national titles, has a hard time getting people to their games. Do you blame us? We're still UM's 12 year old acne-ridden cousin to most of South Florida.

5) Adam Beasley is a little f@g who is pissed he's on furlough. Not to mention he writes for the UMiami Herald.

6) This is our first bowl game ever. Most people aren't familiar with the idea of buying a ticket even if you don't plan on going.

I'm content with watching my team play on ESPN the day after Christmas. It'll be the most national exposure we've had since the IT hire or the Kendall Barry stabbing, and people will actually get to see our team play. Hopefully T.Y. has another great performance and we show everyone we have some legit playmakers.

As for the rest of you, some of yall should apply to work at the Herald, because your constant attempts to bring down FIU is pathetic as sh!t.

Yea FIU just sucks in so many ways. Hopefully they pull out the W though, because I think we've all had enough of the Toledo guy.

BFE isn't a Miami expression. It's used everywhere.

Also, it wasn't hard for the MT administration to see that buying tickets (even if you couldn't go) and donating them would make MT more desirable in the future. If the bulk of FIU fanatics are like you are, then expect more trips to Detroit, Boise, Albuquerque, etc. etc. etc.

I can come up with a rebuttal for each lame excuse you posted.

I know there are FIU fans that are excited about going to their first bowl game, and are scoping out Detroit and Windsor destinations to hit up. Come on and post here so we don't think that every FIU fan is a crybaby who thinks the SBC screwed them (when actually FIU just wasn't wanted in N.O. or Mobile).

(12-18-2010 10:08 AM)FloridaJag Wrote:  It is hard to sell tickets to a game that is the day after Christmas day. Die hard FIU fans would have to cancel their Christmas plans in order to travel to Detroit for the bowl game. That is not going to happen.

You would also need twenty charter flights from Miami to Detroit on the morning of December 26th in order to get anywhere near 3,000 FIU fans in the stand. Flying from Miami to Detroit is easier than from any other Sun Belt school location except for FAU and UNT.

This bowl would have to draw from every die hard SBC fan and you still would not get 5,000 fans on December 26th. MTSU fans might be able to pull it off but that is a big if since it would be a 10 hour drive in good weather conditions.

This bowl needs to be played on December 27th in order to give SBC alumni and students time to make travel arrangements to and from Detroit.

Realistically, this bowl is a schedule filler for ESPN to give the sport shows something to talk about as they begin pumping up the bigger bowl games.

By the way, I heard that UConn is having a hard time with their ticket sales as well.

It's actually significantly less to travel on Christmas Day then the day before or after Christmas. I had to buy a round trip (last minute) ticket for my girlfriend to San Antonio this year and was very surprised to see that travelling "on" Christmas is pretty cheap - probably because most people want to spend that time with family. I really don't see the big deal, I could have Christmas morning with my family - eat plenty of food - and go to the airport for the flight to my team's first ever bowl game. Seems like a no brainer to me.

FIU screwed up - once they hit the 6 win mark they were guaranteed a bowl invite. They had (at the very least) a share of the conference championship and would be going "somewhere"... The athletic department could have started a ticket campaign for a bowl game. They would not have known which bowl game - but they could have started sales. Where that bowl is, should not matter to your fans - it is your first bowl game ever. Going to a bowl is the "Super Bowl" for your fans, at least it is supposed to be. It should be the ONLY game that you care about and you should consider it a priviledge to be invited, no matter where it is. The school should have put together packages and sold the crap out of them. It is very damaging to your program sell a couple hundred tickets. Bowls will shy away from FIU until you can put together a travelling fan base. I really think you guys should have subsidized the travel packages and basically made it less than 100 bucks for any student to go. If you charter the planes, buy hotel rooms in bulk (along with the team, band, cheer, and dance), and use your numbers to your advantage - you could have made a respectable showing. Your AD (that likes to blame others) dropped the ball and the fans should hold him accountable.

RE: Buying tickets matter - FIU embarrassing sales
What are we going to do about our AD who....hired the FB Coach that took an 0-12 team to SBC Champions in 4 years, hired the baseball Coach that won an SBC Tourney in 3 years, hired Coach Thomas (still up in the air as to the results on this one), completed the 1st Phase of the new football stadium and has started renovations on the USCB Arena? Sorry, give that man a raise! So far he has fallen short in one very important area, and that is private fundraising. FIU needs as much funds as possible in order to continue to improve its on the field and off the field product.

We are all excited about the opportunity to showcase FIU and FIU Football to a national audiance next Sunday. I can't wait for the game and hope we take another step in the right direction for this program.

CajunT, that was pretty good 04-cheers

It's going to be a great game, and I believe it will be Toledo's inability to keep FIU out of the endzone that winds up being the difference in this game. I expect a little bit of a shootout, but I see Florida International coming out on top because they have shown more promise on defense this year than Toledo.

Going out on a limb with your prediction, I see.

You forgot to point out that the team that scores the most points will probably win the game.

I think WKU have a parking lot for students labeled "BFE". They even have a sign there stating such. Is that correct, Topper fans?
