Interesting. Thanks.

We'll see where this goes before I go with the snark. There's an obvious funny just waiting to be dealt.

Well since ULM and FAU got to count the Little Rock and Detroit home attendance in football respectively, I motion that USA be allowed to count the Louisville game attendance. 05-stirthepot

Won't work.

You see in basketball, there's already a team that plays its home games in Little Rock that actually IS from Little Rock.

Out of curiosity, what is the capacity of the 'Belt basketball facilities?

I know that FAU's is now 2700 after the remodel down from the original 5000.

The students have really come out and that side was really full against USF.

Cajundome holds 11,550 for basketball.

I think FIU is only about 5,000 seat capacity.

Its on the "List" but I think one WAY down the line.

Sorry about the size of the picture, but I dont know how to shrink them.

The Burrow was just had a 10 million dollar refurbishment thanks to an insurance check due to hurricane damage. Its very nice inside IMHO but obviously a small capacity. Every seat has chairbacks now and they have 4 luxury boxes.

Next up (after the OCS Football stadium) will be a refurb of the baseball stadium. All the plans are in place for it but it was put on hold till the OCS is done.

I believe that basketball would be next but I cant imagine it getting done for 10-15 years or so.

Sorry about the size of the picture, but I dont know how to shrink them.

UALR 5,600
UNT 10,040
USA 10,041
TROY 4,000
WKU 8,300

So using the first post attendance figures:

ASU 10,925-------21% Occupancy
DU 7,200---------45% Occupancy
FAU 2,700--------39% Occupancy
FIU 5,000--------38% Occupancy
ULL 11,550-------28% Occupancy
ULM 7,085--------15% Occupancy
MTSU 11,520------29% Occupancy
UALR 5,600--------52% Occupancy
UNT 10,040--------36% Occupancy
USA 10,041--------23% Occupancy
TROY 4,000--------47% Occupancy
WKU 8,300----------56% Occupancy

Avg Sunbelt attendance: 36% occupancy. (rounded up)

Im assuming these include "tickets sold" as well, so I'm wondering why attendance seems so bad at basketball games?

Is it because most schools are in the south where football is king?

The F_U attendance issue I feel is directly related to performance. South Florida is a WIN or DIE place.

So basically basketball teams are playing in front of half empty stadiums or worse.

RE: Sun Belt Basketball Attendance (Home Games)
One of my thoughts on attendance and capacity is the perception of it.

Lets say FAU keeps winning and attendance winds up averageing 2200. That would still be 4th worst in the 'Belt in terms of actual seats sold, (according to the chart above) but would represent 81% capacity equaling a packed, rocking arena.

Do people take the capacity into consideration when looking at attendance in a "good or bad" light?

40% full at ASU can be rather loud and imposing and make a great home court advantage.

It also won't work since ULM doesn't use the Little Rock attendance in its home averages anymore. NCAA doesn't require that of us now. However, we've got a 5-games-over-ten-years contract with them that has us as the home team "officially". I think we still have two games with Arkansas left on that contract and we'll still be the home team whether we like it or not.

Not really, but I will qualify that.

Attendance doesn't really matter as much in basketball since there are no penalties for bad attendance. But attendance is always a measure of the health of your program and obviously a big source of revenue.

The rule of thumb that I have read in the past is that averaging 10k is considered "high major" although many BCS programs do not average that.

Capacity comes into play in atmosphere. The crowd has more affect on a basketball game than maybe any other sport because it is inside. When your arena is full it will be louder and have a better atmosphere.

I have been to Rupp when it is rocking with 23000 fans it it and I will tell you that Diddle with 7300 fans can be just as loud when the crowd gets going. I'm sure the same is true for FAU.

Averaging 100% capacity in a 2600 seat arena will not turn any heads in the Big East or anything, but if you fill the arena, get it loud and it will affect the outcome of games.

look at Duke...that arena is nothing special...but when there is a overflow crowd for EVERY game...it becomes an almost impossible place to win at.

If FAU would simply market its games better in Boca Raton (road signs, balloons, billboards, local radio spots), and even into West Palm Beach, attendance would double just from the curiosity factor. Tickets are cheap, it's good entertainent, it's easy-in, easy-out and close to two major population centers.

USA's attendance is very disappointing to say the least, but not as much the team's performance to date. Hopefully some changes will be made at season's end. In the '70s and '80s (the old SBC days) we used to pack the 10,000-seat Civic Center in downtown Mobile. I know, I know that's ancient history.
