We do not know if he will be the highest paid coach for next year, do we ? Stockstill will get a raise for another bowl, adding to his base. Cristobal and Blakeney will most likely get raises.

I think it's a three way tie until we find out what they can do. All seem like better hires than what they had before, though. I guess that's the important thing.

I don't wish to be critical of UNT's hire. I think it is great that they stepped up and paid the big money. But I won't be in awe of a 57 year old dude who was fired from Iowa State and didn't land another head coaching job until North Texas rang.

So some of you UNT guys can simmer down with the bragging until McCarney wins the Sun Belt a couple times. We're impressed with your hire - but we aren't THAT impressed.

I think its a pretty decent hire for north texas.

I'm wondering though, what's the record of retreads - coaches fired from previous BC$ head coaching gigs at the schools that give them a second chance? Are they mostly successful or do they fail as often or more than hires that were not previously fired from a head coaching position?

Off the top of my head, Schnellenberger, Frank Solich, and Tommy West have had success. I don't count O'Leary and Price because they didn't become a retreads due to on-field performance but rather personal scandals that cost them their jobs.

FYI, McCarney was offered the USA job when he was an assistant at USF, but a family health situation (I believe it was his mother) made it important to him that he stay in Florida so he took the assistant job at UF instead.
That being said, I will repeat myself and say that I think all three new coaches have outstanding resumes and I find it impossible to predict who will have the most success.
I do know Joey Jones is better than all of them, though!

Schnellenberger didn't have a career losing record. Solich never won enough games to satisfy the tradition at Nebraska and West was always well respected but his tenure was just bad at the end. There are many more examples of successful younger coaches cutting their teeth at the lower level before moving up to a higher level.

I think all three programs made good hires, that should improve the quality of football in the SBC. But how much help they are given financailly to improve in certain areas is a question that interest me on all three hires. Hudspeth made it clear that is was not just his contract, but deficiencies in assistant salary and recruiting budgets that he wanted addressed. This is why he was able to offer Troy OC Edenfield more money then he is currently getting paid.

North Texas has more resources then ASU or UL, but it will be interesting to see how close we are to those areas of football operating expences and not just salary.

Does McCarney or Hudspeth wear a visor? Have either been featured in a movie as a character and actor? Do either have really cool last names or a personal relationship with Sandra Bullock?

Didn't think so. Those guys suck. FREEZE IS THE BEST HIRE!!!

That's why he was our second choice. Visors are winnors. Freeze's wife is hotter than Hudspeth's wife.

Sandra Bullock isn't that hott. The girl from 24, Elisha Cuthbert, is. She's wallpapered on my desktop right now. 02-13-banana

I'm going to have to correct your spelling. Visors are WINNERS.

Look at Saints Coach Sean Payton. Visor wearer = Championship! 02-13-banana

I agree completely. My wife made fun of me the first season of 24 because my buddy would call after each episode to discuss Elisha's fantastic running scenes.

I didn't know both guys were visor guys. I just though you were trying to say "whiners" but was crazy with the spelling.

I like my visor guy as much as I bet you like yours.

Both are up and comers. Honestly, UNT may have the right guy but I would have preferred either of our coaches to McCarney because I didn't want a retread.

Did I mention that our coach is an MMA champion under the name Deep Freeze? He has a killer move called Hypothermia.
