Sounds like we could have done worse, I mean he is a Badger after all, he has to be a swell guy hah just kidding.

I'm hoping Fleck gets OC, that would be an awesome team!

He was recruiting coordinator at Wisky for a while too it appears. Regionally it makes a ton of sense. I like it. With the names mentioned, it would be tough to go wrong here.

RE: It's Dave Doeren
From Wisconsin Badger website... I LOVE this hire. Doeren is an up and comer. All I hope for is a beautiful three to five year tenure at NIU that includes at LEAST one MAC Championship. Welcome Dave !
====

Dave Doeren was promoted to defensive coordinator in January of 2008 after spending his first two seasons at Wisconsin as the Badgers' co-defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. He continues to coach the UW linebackers.

Last year Doeren guided one of the top defenses in the country as the Badgers won 10 games for just the sixth time in school history. Wisconsin led the Big Ten and ranked fifth in the country in rushing defense, allowing just 88.2 yards per game on the ground. That's the second-best rush defense in school history. The Badgers held each of their last 10 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing, the longest streak in the country this season and the longest streak in school history.

UW gave up an average of just 305.7 yards per game, good for 17th in the country. Wisconsin also tied for 10th in the country with 37 quarterback sacks (most since 1998) and tied for 15th in tackles for loss. Linebacker Chris Borland was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year while defensive end O'Brien Schofield earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, ranking second in the country with 24.5 tackles for loss (second-most in school history). He also tied for seventh in the country and third in school history with 12.0 sacks.

In Doeren's first season as defensive coordinator, 2008, the Badgers ranked fourth in the Big Ten in total defense. Seven Badger defenders earned All-Big Ten mention and two UW players, defensive end Matt Shaughnessy and linebacker DeAndre Levy, were drafted in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. First-year starting middle linebacker Jaevery McFadden led the Badgers in tackles under the tutelge of Doeren.

Wisconsin compiled a 21-5 mark in Doeren's first two seasons in Madison and the Badger defense played a significant role in that success. Doeren coached Wisconsin's leading tackler in each of those campaigns, including Mark Zalewski in 2006 and Jonathan Casillas in 2007. Both players were team captains and both earned honorable mention All-Big Ten acclaim. The Badgers are 31-2 during Doeren's four seasons when they take a lead into the fourth quarter and 25-2 when they allow 20 points or less.

Wisconsin led the nation in pass efficiency defense (84.19 rating) in 2006 and finished second to Virginia Tech in passing yards allowed per game (138.3) and scoring defense (12.1 ppg). UW also was No. 5 nationally in total defense, allowing just 253.1 yards per contest. The Badgers led the Big Ten in all of those defensive categories. Zalewski (a senior in 2006), a two-time team captain, led the Badgers with 90 tackles and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten acclaim. Casillas earned honorable mention All-Big Ten kudos and led UW with 12.5 tackles for loss in 2006. DeAndre Levy, an Academic All-Big Ten honoree, paced the Badgers with six quarterback sacks.

Doeren has risen quickly through the college coaching ranks. He was the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas from 2002-05 and was promoted in the summer of 2005 to co-defensive coordinator. The Jayhawks, who routed Houston, 42-13, in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl, led the Big 12 Conference and ranked No. 3 nationally in rushing defense (83.3 ypg) in `05. Kansas also was No. 2 in the Big 12 and 11th nationally in total defense (303.3 ypg). KU linebacker Nick Reid was a two-time, first-team All-Big 12 selection, a third-team A.P. All-American and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. Three other Jayhawk linebackers (Banks Floodman, Kevin Kane--current UW graduate assistant - and Brandon Perkins) were named honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2005.

Doeren went to Kansas after spending two seasons as the secondary coach (as well as one season as recruiting coordinator) at Montana. The Grizzlies won the NCAA Division I-AA title in 2001. Doeren coached seven all-conference defensive backs at Montana, including two who earned All-America honors. The Grizzlies were 28-3 with two conference championships during Doeren's two seasons.

Prior to his time at Montana, Doeren was a two-year (1998-99) graduate assistant at Southern California. The 1998 Trojans led the nation in interceptions with 24 (including five that were returned for TDs). USC led the nation in turnover margin in 1999 and was second nationally in interceptions with 21 (including five returned for TDs).

Doeren started his college coaching career as an assistant at Drake from 1995-97. He coached linebackers all three years and became defensive coordinator in 1997.

Doeren began coaching (wide receivers and defensive line) at Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Northwest High School in 1994. A graduate of Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Doeren was a four-year letterwinner at Drake (where he was a teammate of current Wisconsin defensive line coach Charlie Partridge) and earned Academic All-America honors as a senior.

Doeren, who has coached in seven bowl games and two national championship contests, is a native of Shawnee Mission, Kan. He and his wife, Sara, have three sons: Jacob, Luke and Connor.

Respect to Compher for being able to stay at least a little under the radar with this one.

We knew of 1 interview. There were a few names linked to the job. And only last night did anything pop up with the usual rumor mongers that NIU had focused on anyone (Doeren, Martin, and Fleck interviewing).

Then the Doeren hire pops overnight.

RE: It's Dave Doeren
The Rose Bowl thing is interesting.

The couple mentions in the broadcast of him taking over NIU will be nice.

I wonder/hope if some sort of arrangement is in place where he works on game prep and practices with them, and work on recruiting for us.

Also hoping he can peel a couple Badger assistants to come with him. I'm sure we're about to see guys who were either assitants or GAs at Wisconsin in the last few years on staff.

Seems like a good hire. Not disappointed. Like any hire, only time will tell. I like that we go after up and comers. It will be interesting to see who he brings as his assistants. If some of you were Compher, you would be telling him who to hire(PJ or Hammock OC).

Very happy with this hire. Very happy. I hope he can put together a good staff - I hope he can get some continuity with these players. We do not need to scrap everything and start over. We need someone who can coach the guys we have because we have some good guys here.

Go Huskies!

Good hire huskies.

I think not starting til after the rosebowl is not a big deal. He can start feeling out staff in an unofficial capacity, but once the bowl games start (this weekend) recruiting is on a dead period until they are over, so he cant do much besides set up his office and formally announce a staff.
