FAU-Troy Tailgate Party Saturday in Fort Lauderdale
Troy and FAU fans will gather Saturday not far from the main gates and press box on the south side of Lockhart Stadium (Commercial Blvd.) in Fort Lauderdale. Beginning around 10:30 a.m., we'll have food, drink and fellowship to celebrate the 2 p.m. regular season-ender (and last FAU game ever at Lockhart) between the Trojans and Owls.

We'll be around after the game as well.

We'll have some grub and drinks, but feel free to bring want you want and stop by. Look for my blue Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Troy flags(s). chairs, grill, etc. Even if you do not know us personally, stop by and say hello. We do this every year in Florida (at FAU or FIU) mainly for our large group of Troy alumni in the Sunshine State. But many times, the Troy fans seem to be on the other side of the stadium. Our area is right in the midst of the FAU tailgaters, but we all get along.

Contact me for directions, things to do and more info. This will be your last chance to experience Lockhart, the "beautiful" yet actually pleasing place to watch a college football game (and they sell beer inside!). FAU will play in its new on-campus stadium next season.

'Can't make it? The game's on ESPNU at 2 p.m eastern.

I am not as familiar with the intricaies of Fort Lauderdale (pretty big place) than I am of the Palm Beaches. But I like the local Don Ramon restaurant chain. I do beleve they have locations down there, and I believe, in the Boca area.

If you're in Boca, go to Boca Beach, and just south, Deerfield Beach Pier area. Mizner Park in Downtown Boca (off U.S. 1) is gorgeous. Fort Lauderdale's Las Olas is similar, as is West Palm Beach's City Place and Clematis Street districts. The Hard Rock and other casinos are nearby Lockhart, as are the Florida Panthers and Heat (farther drive south, into Downtown Miami). Several areas have their Intracoastal waterway holiday boat parades coming up, although I'm not sure if any are this weekend. Fort Lauderdale's is huge.

We'll probably swing by. Just curious, I thought the stadium wasn't going to be ready in time for the opener next year? I thought I had read, and this was a few months back, that it would be ready in October next year. I'm probably wrong though.

And I did not know that about selling beer inside. Nice.

FAU is, if possible, putting off its home games until October.

I think Lockhart might sell some sort of other alcoholic beverages as well.

For watching a game, the place is great. All sightlines are good and you're mostly close to the field. And the teams will be close to 80 on Saturday (at least 75). It's 83 here today. The stadium is 10 minutes from the beach, and the FAU campus is even closer to the water. Supposedly, the new stadium's suites will offer ocean views.

I heard the Troy band will be placed in one of the end zone corners facing the visiting bench. Other visiting bands have been placed in the opposite end zone corner facing the press box.

The FAU band and students have been moved to the visitor's sideline. They were previously in the end zone, which caused many photos to appear as if no one was in the stadium.

And I just saw the FIU kickoff is at 6. We might go to that one too, if we don't run off to the Casino!

I know Dad will be up for it. He went to a FSU game in Tally with an old friend of his one morning, then they drove to Troy that night after they got back to Dothan for a 6:00 kickoff game. Across town will be nothing!

FIU is west of Miami, about an hour south of Lockhart. Take Florida's Turnpike until it becomes the turnpike extension (follow signs to the Keys and Homestead). You'll go west and past Dolphin Stadium and the horse track. FIU is right off one of the exits, to the east of the highway.

FAU is hosting South Florida in basketball in Boca after the football game. That should be an interesting game and bring a big crowd.

Go to FIU

FIU is about 2 minutes off the Turnpike at the SW 8th St./Tamiami Trail exit. It's about 45' south of Lockhart once you get back on the Turnpike. Save your appetite and google Cuban restraunts around FIU...there are a bunch and you get a lot of food for a little price. My favorite is La Carreta....these restraunts are good and fast.
But you can only eat there a couple times a month because it is just too much food.

p.s. try the ropa vieja (shredded beef in sauce), bistec de pollo a la plancha (grilled chicken steak with sweet onions), carne asada (kind of a beef stew in sauce with potatos) all with black beans and rice....I like it with tabasco and lime as well.

Thanks guys. I have family in Kendall so I'm familiar with La Carreta and some of the smaller ones in that area. I was hoping to save an hour off an already long trip.

Thanks Kajun I may have to give those a try.

Dammit you are making me hungry.

I love me some Cuban cuisine. We have a restaurant in Murfreesboro (Maple Street Grille) that ships in bread from Florida for their Cuban sandwiches, and they make a very good black beans & rice (not as good as South Florida, but similar).
