Game brings back memories of tragic plane crash
Evansville plays at Middle Tennessee tonight. Back in 1977, the Evansville team plane crashed on its way to play Middle Tennessee.

DNJ article:

Quote:...
On Dec. 13, 1977, the University of Evansville basketball team's plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Indiana en route to Nashville and ultimately Murfreesboro for a game against the Blue Raiders. It killed all 29 people aboard, including the 14-man basketball team, coach Bobby Watson, staff, supporters and flight crew.

In the years following, the teams never considered playing the game. Tonight they will meet for the first time, nearly 33 years after the tragedy.

"You just couldn't have played this game five years after or 10 years after the tragedy," said Jimmy Earle, MTSU's basketball coach in 1977. "But plenty of time has passed. I'm glad they're finally renewing it and playing the game."

A moment of silence will be held before today's game at 7 p.m. at Murphy Center. Evansville officials, who have memorialized the victims of the crash hundreds of times over 33 years, asked MTSU to limit the commemoration.....
