RE: FAU vs Arkansas St. Game Thread
It's on in Nashville. Wish the picture was better.

My name is Charlie Brennan, from Charlestown I come.
I've traveled this wide world over, some ups and downs I've had.
I've traveled this wide world over, some ups and downs I saw,
But I never knew what mis'ry was till I hit old Arkansas.

I landed in St. Louis with ten dollars and no more.
I read the daily papers till both my eyes were sore.
I read them evening papers, until at last I saw
Ten thousand men were wanted in the State of Arkansas.

I wiped my eyes with great surprise when I read this happy news.
And straight off I went to see the agent, Billy Hughes.
He said "Pitch me five dollars, and a ticket you shall draw
To ride upon the railroad to the State of Arkansas.

I started off next morning at a quarter after five.
I started from St. Louis, half dead and half alive,
I bought me a quart of whiskey, my misery to thaw
And I got drunk as a boiled owl when I left for Arkansas.

'Twas in the year of '82 in the merry month of June
I landed in Ft. Smith on a sultry afternoon.
The air so hot and dusty, my breath I could not draw
But I got off to see what was in the State of Arkansas.

I dodged behind the depot, to duck the oven wind.
There I met a walking skeleton, his name was James T. Glynn.
His hair hung down in rat-tails o'er his long and lantern jaw.
Invited me to his hotel "the best in Arkansas."

I followed my conductor into his dwelling place.
There mis'ry and starvation could be seen in ev'ry face.
His bread it was corn dodger, his meat I could not chaw
But he charged me a half a dollar in the State of Arkansas.

I started off next morning, in a hard and driving rain.
He says to me "If you will work, I have some land to drain
I'll pay you fifty cents a day, your board and wash and all
You'll find yourself a different man when you leave old Arkansas.

He fed me on corn dodgers, as hard as any rock,
Till my teeth began to loosen and my knees began to knock.
I grew so thin on sassafras tea, I could hide behind a straw
And, indeed I was a different man when I left old Arkansas.

So farewell to swamp-angels, to canebreaks and fever chills
Farewell to sage and sassafras and corn-dodger pills.
If I ever see this land again, I'll give to you my paw
But it'll be though a telescope, from Hell to Arkansas
.

That's what I get for assuming PATs are automatic.

Positives met a couple FAU fans, none who frequent the boards but managed to be really nice anyway. 03-lmfao

Two utterly flat disinterested teams. FAU woke up after busting the 80 yard pass and then ASU woke up after the hit and pick. Fans did not get their money's worth for the first half intensity and play.

For those who see holds on every play FAU edition.
FAU saw the downside of sending too many receivers one in the middle of the field got his jersey held big time but even towing a defender don't think he could have gotten there, might want to see if recruits are equipped with towing package though.

For those who see holds on every play ASU edition.
Demario Davis had a clear path at Van Camp and was running like a hunch-back because of the offensive lineman attached to his back. See above about towing packages.

You called it award.
Crump said "No way we beat FAU without a turnover" late in the second half. ASU scores 21 set-up or directly off turnovers.

RE: FAU 16 vs Arkansas St. 37, Game Thread (FINAL)
Im not going to get in a rant over how horrible the officiating in this game might have been the worst ive ever seen because personally it might have been , but horrible calls were made against both teams. But what gets me is when terrible officiating influences the momentum and the way a ballgame goes. For example the kickoff that FAU recovered after going up 16-9 in the fourth qtr and got called offsides on. Watching on tv the replay showed no such thing. Even the announcers were like ughhhhhh dont know where they got offsides from there looking at it again on replay. At that point FAU had total momentum and the ball deep in ASU territory but after that call the entire game and momentum went straight to ASU and they did a great job of taking advantage of their opportunity. Cant say anything about all the holds and what not because that can be called on every play typically at the discretion of the ref but my complaint is why are the officials that rep the sunbelt at such a bushleague level compared to the other conf refs. same goes for bball as well.

And no im not trying to say we lost the game because of that one play but before that kickoff we were easily moving the ball down the field, then killed ourselves with penalties so we had to settle for a fg but then we got the ball right back on the following kickoff and had all the momentum in the world just to have another penalty called on us that was a fluke and it appeared to completely take all the wind out of our sails from there as we saw what happened after that. Either way win or lose for my team im just tired of watching our teams deal with BS officiating our conference uses.

RE: FAU 16 vs Arkansas St. 37, Game Thread (FINAL)
Roscoe, if FAU had come to play in the first half, calls wouldn't have mattered. The Owls and Red Wolves mailed in the first quarter performance and second half wasn't much better. FAU didn't put together many good drives and the best was the one (outside of the result) the Owls settled for a FG for the final Owl points and the line came unglued in the red zone on that one. That was huge. Could have been a two possession game with a quarter left (bizarrely FAU staff ran the clock down in order to kick that 36 yarder into the wind rather than with it, very, very, strange coaching decision because it resulted in kicking off into a strong wind). O-line keeps its head screwed on there, FAU probably wins.

I could rant about SUN BELT officiating, the problem is on Saturdays when I don't go to games I tune in Big 10, SEC, and Big XII games and don't see that the officiating is significantly better. I see numerous high definition replays that leave me scratching my head.

It effects the Sun Belt but it isn't a SUN BELT problem, its a problem with the game overall.

I think there are two keys to fixing the problem.

The first is money. A quality hoops official can make a living doing games, a football official cannot though the proliferation of week night games is getting us closer to that. Right now we are stuck with people who can make a living doing something else but can take off early often enough on Friday and don't have to work on Saturday or Sunday as our pool of officials. That eliminates a lot of people and they have to give up Monday-Friday to work their regular job and then give up 13-14 weekends. A professional officiating corps can change that and open it up to more people who aren't in jobs that will let them do this.

The second is coaches. Today most coaches want to see their former players either become successful donors or better yet coaches at talent-laden high schools. Coaches have the potential to identify young men who could be outstanding officials and encourage them to pursue that path. I nearly pursued basketball officiating when I was in college. A friend from another high school got into it because his coach would have players officiate scrimmages and pee-wee games to get a feel for what the refs were doing. If you were good he would put you in contact with the officials association as soon as your senior season was over. He convinced me to work some youth games with him and did well enough both were encouraging me to test. Coaches can help us fix this national problem if they will buy into it.

Refs
Here are the latest stats in penalties called per game for FBS:

http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-footbl/stat...-game.html

The Cajuns are far and away penalized less than any other Belt team, coming in at number 30. You have to drop more than 30 spots to see the next Sunbelt team WKU at 62. Then almost 20 more to the next one: MTSU (81). Everyone else is 100 or below starting with Ark State at 100. 3 out of the 5 most penalized teams are in the Sunbelt.

I think it's pretty amazing that only one member of our entire conference is above the halfway mark and six of our nine teams are in the bottom 20 in the country.

So what's up with that? Are we getting the hatchet job when we play OOC? Do "inferior talent/coached" teams get more penalties? Do Sunbelt refs throw waaaaay to many hankies (I know they sure like to throw them when they are on tv). I just find it interesting that our teams are all over the place in other statiscal categories, but when it comes to penalites... hello triple digits!
