Very impressed with USA football
Not only are they drawing well (attendance is fantastic) - they have now beaten their first Div I opponent (an FCS one). And they did it with authority. I think that they are classified as Div II this year? And they are averaging 23K a game... and they are winning. They really could be one hell of a program by the time they get to FBS. No more low hanging fruit for the Belt, quality all the way.

We are technically unclassified this year, and will be FCS the next two years and FBS in 2013. Thanks for the kind words!

How is the game atmosphere? Is there tailgating? Are students going to the games or is it mostly locals? I can't get over your attendance. It is really fantastic and gives me a lot of hope for the future of the conference.

Those of you that think Texas State should be invited to the Belt need to look at their attendance. They had 12K show up this last weekend for Cal Poly. Pretty sad. And Texas State fans will blame this on the lack of interest due to the opponent - but look at USA against Nichols! The opponent should not be the excuse, fans should show up to watch the team that they cheer for. USA is proof of that. Sometimes I think that it is better to have no history over bad history. These start-up programs don't have decades of apathy playing against them.

Another congrats, I really thought Nichols would win easily. Looks like USA is building the right way and should be competitive in the Belt relatively quickly.

FWIW NCAA oficial site classifies USA as 1AA Provisional. Saragin is carrying them as 1AA Indy.

To be honest, Nicholls State is the taildragger of the Southland this year.

Yeah but USA was playing High Schools last year. They have really come a long way in one year. Have they lost yet? I think that they are undefeated. And look at their attendance. Pretty amazing (and scary) that they are doing this so easily.

Thanks for the props. Yes, 9-0 in our short history.

After the next 3 games, our last 5 will really give us a good indication as to where we are as program, particularly a 3 game swing going against Lamar on the road, UC Davis on the road, then Georgia St at home. First time we'll have had back to back road games, no weeks off the rest of the way, a high quality FCS opponent, and two other like-minded startups. I think our team is excited that they are about to be challenged, and are ready for it.

We won the Nicholls game pretty handily, but it was close for a while. Early defensive mistakes led to a couple of big plays (the first time we had been down in a game, ever), and we immediately responded both times on our next possession. That, to me, said a lot about our team.

Game atmosphere is good, but can be better. And I'm sure it will continue to get better. Working out kinks and establishing traditions. I think we have a lot of fans who haven't regularly attended college football games and don't know the ins and outs of college football fandom. It's growing though.

Yes, there is tailgating. Pretty good crowd typically, but with our arrangement with the stadium and the way it's laid out, it doesn't lend itself very well to it. You have to buy a season parking pass. If you don't have one, or don't know someone who does, you're out of luck (at least on TG inside the stadium grounds). We are all not-so-secretly wishing for an on campus stadium by 2013. The parking situation isn't so great either. Shuttles run from the mall to the stadium (probably a 15 minute ride) and there is parking around the stadium at various spots for a cost. I really think that attendance would be even better on campus because of these kinds of things.

Good mix in the crowd. I'd venture a guess of around 5,000 students at the game? The season ticket stands are a mostly older crowd. Look forward to this shifting as new graduates come on board.

As a UAB alum and Blazer fan, it's exciting to see USA putting together a program. I haven't met a single UAB fan that wishes USA ill-will. There are some skeptics, but I think most just want to see what you do, given how young a program we are. To see the road you go down and see how it might be very like or very different from the one we went down, and are still on.

We've played basketball so long that we have a long-standing affection for the Jags, and hope they do well.

You'll likely have smooth sailing unless/until you alienate gump nation, like UAB did. It will happen the first time Joey Jones and Nick Saban eyeball the same high school kid. Think it won't happen? I assure you, it will.

I don't think Saban (and probably the guy after him) will be there long enough for USA and Alabama to seriously be in on the same kid. The problem at UAB is that you have the same BOT as Bama (right?), not to mention that you're 70 miles from the behemoth. And Birmingham is much more pro-Tide than Mobile. Baldwin probably leans toward Auburn. Mobile leans toward the Tide, but has a large mixed bag predominantly made up of LSU fans and those of the Mississippi schools.

Two entirely different situations. I think.

RE: Very impressed with USA football
You're right about sharing a BoT with the Evil Empire. Even then, we flew under their radar until Gene Bartow accused cheaters of cheating. I guess what I meant about gump nation is how bitter and dismissive joe bama fan seems to be toward UAB athletics in general, and football in particular.

I also think that USA and UA-T will be sniffing around some of the same kids sooner than you think. It won't be often, and there won't be many, but it'll happen, and when it does, their shenanigans will rub you the wrong way, because it hurts your program. It's when you point that out that you make the enemies list.

I bet Troy fans could tell you some horror stories.

Please don't misunderstand. I don't mean to be all doom and gloom. Fact is, I'm excited for you guys. I think every school that wants a football team should field one. Also, I for one would not be averse to getting you on the schedule on a regular basis. Why? Because in-state rivalries are fun, and add to the interest of college football. Something the $EC behemoths have never figured out. Remember, the only reason they play each other is because the state legislature forced them to.

RE: Very impressed with USA football
I was all excited to try and catch the first half of the USA game this weekend down in Dothan before riding up to Troy for our game, but Troy got bumped to 2:30 for SBC TV, so that nixed that plan. My Dad went to UAB and USA, both sisters, a cousin, and a brother in law to UA, and myself, my wife, and her little brother to Troy. So we've got a lot of schools covered in the family! At least none of us went to Auburn.

That's funny. My dad went to UAB, USA, and...Auburn. I went to Troy. So far that's it.

He couldn't care less about any other school in Alabama except Auburn though.

At least there's no Jax State alums among us!

I know we met a couple of years ago watching the Ohio State game, but remind me what you do in Dothan. I grew up there from the 4th grade on, and my folks still live there.
