As Week 2 of the college football season goes, the Owls' non-conference road game against North Texas on Saturday should be business-as-usual. But not for Michael Smith, the Owls' junior defensive tackle who will be making only his second trip to the North Texas campus since his older brother, Andrew Smith Jr., died in a car accident in 2004.

Six years ago, Andrew Smith Jr. was at the height of his football career. He led Bay City to the Class 4A Division I state title in 2000. Two years later, Smith, a redshirt freshman quarterback, guided North Texas to an eight-win season and 24-19 victory over Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl — the first bowl victory for the school since 1946.
