ESPN is reportedly pushing this with the television rights.

Could be interesting if this has any legs.

It has no legs.

I can't imagine MWC and CUSA cutting the pie up that many times and coming out better than they are now.

While you may be correct, I think I will wait for someone in the know to squash the rumor. Especially since it is coming from the Memphis AD and sources in Houston that are perpetuating the rumor.

Depends on what ESPN offers. If this is true then ESPN would be offering a substantial TV contract. They know that this contract would have to be very lucrative to convince the parties involved to play ball.

My Memphis contact tells me that it was more thinking out loud than a real proposal and would have required giving up the CUSA title game which would pit the CUSA champ v. MWC as "divisions" but to be legit also would have required merging basketball and getting waivers from NCAA schedule requirements on divisions (under current rules the "CUSA Division" would have to play 11 divisional games).

Load of horse hockey no one thought out.

The superconference may or may not be viable, but the story is still running. No telling where this finally ends. A merged title game with a BCS berth would effectively lock out the remaining non-aq teams.

"Late Thursday night, a source close to the situation said that representatives from the Mountain West and another league — believed to be Conference USA — met in Colorado to discuss a plan to match the two conferences’ champions in a title game, with the winner gaining an automatic BCS berth."

RE: WAC commish radio conference on now
But that's not 'merging' conferences....that's pitting the champs against each other....correct?

Some sources are still trumpeting the "Super Conference". ESPN is supposed to be the driving force behind it. They want one conference that they cna use for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night games.

Other sources are saying the "Super Conference" is too difficult to manage with too many teams. They are saying that two conferences (most likely CUSA and MWC) will play into a BCS conference game.

Money talks. If ESPN puts enough money behind it, then they will probably get what they want. The money of the BCS game will definitely spark interest with the conferences involved, especially the CUSA.

RE: WAC commish radio conference on now
Well you can't do it under current rules it is either one of your regular season games (ie. counts against the 12) or is a conference title game, which means you have to play everyone in your division in regular season (11 CUSA games and as of now 10 MWC), or you have to convince 11 university presidents on the Board of Directors of the NCAA that they should approve an additional post-season game for the MWC-CUSA champs to determine who goes to the BCS. Sun Belt, MAC, and WAC are no votes, and chances are very good that Big 10, Pac-10, and ACC who have been the biggest anti-playoff advocates think it smells too much like a playoff to them, while the presidents on the BCS council note that it looks like a playoff also and would mean giving AQ status to the winner of two leagues who don't meet the AQ criteria.

Waiting for the little guy to start telling me he sees the plane.

Had to wait for some older parts of the brain to fire off also, but very funny.

RE: WAC commish radio conference on now
The only way to make this work well, would be a FB only super conf. AAC, the all america conf has 20 football only members consisting of 2 10 team divisions, the MW and USA divisions. each side plays 9 conf games. You play everyone in your division with 0 crossovers. CUSA becomes a 12 team other sports conf, as does MWC. You could even have a couple of minor bowls pitting in conf teams, being the 2 divisions don't have any crossover other than the champ.

So here is the grand monkey wrench theory. BE gets nova to move up, than grabs Memphis, ECU, and UCF for a 12-19 hybrid. Temple moves to CUSA as 10th school. Byu goes inde, and the new 10 team MWC forms the new 20 team football only league with CUSA with auto bid. Cotton bowl gets 5th bcs bid, and other non bcs conf have same basic deal as now without as much competition.
