Some real impact from realignment
Was reading today that the Pac-10 expects to stay with a 9 game schedule when they go to 12 teams and the Big 10 is seriously considering a 9 game schedule as well. We already know that the Big XII has committed to a 9 game schedule.
That means 20 fewer opportunities to go chase a check. Game guarantees are likely to stagnant.
The good news is this.
The extra conference games will mean some of the teams making at 6-6 now will be 5-7 having to play an additional conference game.
Looking only at the Big 10 and Big 12, in 2009 there were four teams that made it to 6-6 one went 4-4 in league play, the other three 3-5. In 2008 only one and they were 3-5 in league play. In 2007 there were five from the two leagues, three went 6-6 and two went 3-5 but only three of the five schools were selected for a bowl.
I would say in a given year, there will be one to three spots that wouldn't have existed before.
I wouldn't be surprised if the ACC followed suit if this happens. I don't know that the SEC will be quite so eager.
Folks in the WAC, Sun Belt, MAC, MWC and CUSA better start getting used to the idea of playing each other home and home or they are going to adopt 9 game schedules as well.

That has been the plan for Troy to get to that type of schedule. Unfortunately it hasn't happen for financial reasons. Just another reason to pony and make that donation to their respective athletic fund for those that have not done it yet.

I thought the Belt was planning on a nine game schedule when USA moved up.
