They should be.
In our free country they can spend their cash however they want. In the same vein, we can disagree with their choices.

(04-14-2010 01:38 AM)Grandgreen Wrote: I disagree with a lot of my Texas buddies, I think building outlandish facilities for high school programs is a gross misplacement of priorities. The not public money is a bad argument as most often these facilities are funded almost entirely by bonds that end up being paid more by taxpayers than additional revenues generated. If you want to look at priorities, why have a high school of over 5000 students. Although they will offer up a lot of reasons, the primary rationale is to have a mammoth student body to field superior athletic teams. Because of the intense competition a lot of would be athletes will never get much more than scant opportunity to play at the varsity level.
I think the arms race in college athletics is incredibly stupid, but at the high school level it is almost criminal. The Allen School District is one of the wealthiest in Texas, but the vast majority of schools in Texas are underfunded and don't have the tax basis to generate satisfactory academic resources.
Well I'm a native Texan and I couldn't agree with you more. Ten or so years ago Port Neches-Groves had a similar bond issue for $40+ million to improve/add-on to the high school. New basketball gym, new classrooms, new additions to existing buildings. Want to know what was built first? A new field house for athletics at around $3+ million.
Now the Beaumont, Tx ISD has $388 million to work with, courtesy of a bond issue, and they are building a $38.5 million stadium.
Sadly, sports is first in Texas secondary education.
