WKU releases 2010 football schedule
WKU Announces 2010 Football Schedule
Release: 03/01/2010
by Western Kentucky Western Kentucky University enters its first season under new head coach Willie Taggart with a schedule featuring five opponents who went to post-season bowl games in 2009 and eight match ups with Sun Belt Conference foes. The Hilltoppers' schedule features five home games including the September 18 home opener against Indiana, marking the first time in school history WKU will host a member of the Big 10 conference.

"I love our schedule," Taggart said. "It reflects what we have been teaching our players, that we have to chase greatness every day to be successful at the Division I level. We will be playing some very good teams this year, and the best way to measure yourself and see where you are is to compete against the best."

WKU opens the 2010 season at Nebraska on September 4. The Cornhuskers capped a 10-4 season in 2009 with a 33-0 win over Arizona in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. Nebraska, who reached the Big 12 championship game last year, is the ninth-winningest program in FBS history and ranks fifth all-time in bowl appearances (46) and eighth all-time in bowl wins (24).

WKU and the University of Kentucky will play in Lexington on September 11 in the first meeting of the school's unprecedented four-year football series. The schools will also meet in Lexington in 2012 and at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., in 2011 and 2013. The games in Nashville are designated as home games for the Hilltoppers. Kentucky is led by first-year head coach Joker Phillips and have reached a post-season bowl game in four consecutive seasons (2006, 07, 09 Music City Bowl and 2008 Liberty Bowl), emerging victorious three of the last four years.

WKU travels to Tampa to play South Florida on September 25. South Florida defeated Northern Illinois 27-3 in last season's International Bowl, marking their second consecutive bowl win and fifth consecutive bowl appearance.

WKU will also play a full slate of games against the other eight football members of the Sun Belt Conference with the league champion receiving an automatic berth to the annual R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Defending conference champion Troy has been to a bowl game in four of the last six seasons, Middle Tennessee won the New Orleans Bowl in 2009, and Florida Atlantic has posted post-season bowl victories in two of the last three seasons. The Hilltoppers host Middle Tennessee on November 20. The Blue Raiders lead the series 31-28-1, and the 60 all-time meetings are more than any other opponent in 2010.

WKU begins spring practice on March 23 under the direction of Taggart, who was named head coach on November 23. Taggart previously served as running backs coach at Stanford from 2007-09 and helped Toby Gerhart finish second in balloting for the Heisman Trophy and win the Doak Walker award given to the nation's top running back. Taggart worked as an assistant coach at WKU from 1999-2006 and served as co-offensive coordinator for WKU's 2002 I-AA National Championship team. A standout player at quarterback who set 11 school records for the Hilltoppers from 1995-98, Taggart is one of only four players in WKU's 91-year football history to have his jersey retired.

I will be interested to see if Willie T. still loves this schedule after 11/27.

When you all were first moving up, I remember something about a 10 year series with some FCS school. Someboday that you have a rivalry with? Is it Tenn Tech or something? Anyways, what happened to that plan? Is it money? The plan that the fans were talking about on the message boards was to make the move "smarter" and to keep the scheduling "manageable" with an FCS long term series to maintain tradition. Just curious if the AD did away with that plan or what happened to it... That's a rough OOC schedule.

I don't think that OOC schedule is as tough as some schedules we have all to endure during the early days of the Belt. At least they get a Big Ten lightweight in their house.

When the prez was trying to sell I-A football he mentioned we could continue to play EKU. Well of course we know sbc does not allow iA schools to play at a iaa school. And eku is not going to agree to coming to wku every year. Aka it was never a real possibility.

RE: WKU releases 2010 football schedule
The rivarly with WKU is one of the reasons why I expect EKU to at least look into moving up to FBS. Roy Kidd Stadium is already serviceable as an entry-level FBS stadium (22,000 seats) and UK would gladly cash the rent check from an EKU home game in Lexington should the need arise. The MAC is in need of a 14th school for football only, and EKU would make sense as a Sun Belt expansion candidate as well.

No parking on grass means parking car in lots that are pretty far away, unless you have donated a lot of money that is to the university. Then you can park anywhere you want
