New Sun Belt members?
With UNO dropping to D-3,and Denver looking else where. Will the Sun Belt be trying to add new members?

Until Denver finds a more compatible home, the Belt will have 10 for Football (when USA makes the final move up) and 12 for basketball. Things will still be OK when Denver departs. Unless a candidate can bring $$$ to the conference and pay their way, we don't need another mouth to feed just for the sake of expansion.

I think the SBC will be made up of only FBS football institutions in the near future. How many and who depends on what changes take place in the current FBS conferences memberships.

I guess the SBC could try to go to 12 members and have a championship game like the MAC.

SBC East
FAU
FIU
Western Ky.
MTSU
Troy
South Alabama

SBC West
La-Monroe
La-Lafayette
Arkansas St.
North Texas
La Tech*
New Mexico St*

The WAC is likely to take a serious hit during the next realignment. If the WAC slips below 8 members that will force the hand of LaTech to move to the SBC. NMSU may have a chance at SBC membership again since its not so far West and plays UTEP in Football.

The talk is that Fresno/Nevada/Boise will go to the MWC, NMSU and LT to the SBC, Hawaii independent, SJSU drops football, Utah St and Idaho drop down to FCS.

The system would then be 7 BCS conferences (PAC-10, MWC, Big XII, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big East), 3 non-AQ (SBC, MAC, CUSA), and 4 Independents (Hawaii, Army, Navy, ND)

>>>The talk is that Fresno/Nevada/Boise will go to the MWC, NMSU and LT to the SBC, Hawaii independent, SJSU drops football, Utah St and Idaho drop down to FCS.<<<

This only happens if the PAC10 expands by taking Utah and somebody (probably not BYU, more likely Colorado) and at the same time the Big12 picks-up TCU (having to replace Mizzou). MWC, having lost two then poaches the WAC for two or three members (is this an AQ conference without Utah and TCU? probably not).

Then, even if all that plays out, does the WAC fold or does it promote FCS's like Montana, etc.? And if it folds, do we really want our La. Tech back? From what I've read, they're no friend of the Belt.

I have been following this subject for some time since I am trying to figure out if/how we can get into an FBS conference. The TCU-for-Missouri thing only happens if Missouri goes to the BigTen. If that occurs, the B12 could pull TCU and shift Oklahoma State to the north, or tap Colorado State since it is the only other school in that footprint that is not already in the B12.

The WAC has a long history, and I can't see them stopping just because they lose Fresno, Nevada, and Boise. Will they lose their "darling" status with ESPN, yes, but they will reload like have done in the past. They may take the opportunity to focus on adding more Western Teams from the FCS. Cal Poly, UC-Davis, Sacramento State, and Montana have been suggested However, from what I have read on the subject, state politics will not allow Montana to move with Montana State.

RE: New Sun Belt members?
La Tech is a a giant no and Fresno State doesn't make any sense... I bet we'll pick up GA State if we were to add any new schools. Georgia fits our footprint and will be easier to travel to for most schools (except UNT & stAte). So I think schools from there are a logical addition. Unless you don't want to add right from FCS schools to our numbers.

Personally I love Denver being in the conference, but it'll help both them and the SBC in costs of travel, accommodations, etc. They'd fit much better in a west conference.

I was thinking maybe we could consider Georgia Southern or Appalachian State.

If only some of their most obnoxious and irritating fans could come here and help us weigh the relative pros and cons... 05-stirthepot

So if the Sun Belt winds up at 11 members, even only temporarily, should teams play 14, 16, or 18 conference games in basketball?

I know that, in the past, the Sun Belt has invited Missouri State to join.

RE: New Sun Belt members?
With UNO leaving, we are at a perfect number. Now when Denver leaves, then we can have some discussions. I really would like to keep the basketball divisions even. So, at 11, do you ask UALR to find a new home or do you add a team? If UALR leaves, now you have 10 teams playing all sports. You could do a round-robin basketball schedule. I think this would be my preference. SBC doesn't need 12 football teams and a championship game. It would not be a money maker.

Not exactly.

When Sun Belt football was formed and again when NMSU, Idaho, and USU left the Sun Belt contacted a number of regional I-AA programs to see if moving to I-A was on the agenda and if so, would they be willing to expedite such if offered an invitation.

SMS was one of the several contacted. While the Bears probably would have been viewed favorably, the school wasn't invited because there was no interest in moving I-A. FAMU answered that they wanted to move but that didn't lead to an invite.

Until Missouri State comes to the conclusion it desires to play FBS football they aren't even eligible to be considered for expansion.
