High inbound - mostly red states. High outbound - mostly blue states. Coincidence?

RE: Interesting stats on shifting US demographics
My question is what jobs are they getting in the southern states. Are they getting more manufacturing jobs or switching professions? Most of the states are major manufacturing areas that have been decimated by jobs moving out (not getting into a reason as to why here). They may all be relocating thinking there are more jobs in those areas but after getting there realizing the reality of the situation... they have no skills to fall back on.

They vote blue and when those votes force them to leave for a red state, they bring their failed blue state voting blunders with them. Stay in your socialist paradise's and enjoy what you wrought on yourselves.

Actually, California is losing people and businesses faster than ever. Even the illegals are going back to where ever they came from.

Even unskilled labor has an easier time when the economy is stronger. Plus the cost of living is often less.

I keep hearing and reading the same thing, so I'm surprised to see this map.
ETA: OK, I just checked the source: It's a study of United Van Lines customers. They may be the country's largest movers but this ain't exactly a comprehensive survey.

I believe it's considered one of the best proxies out there. But you're right, it doesn't seem to be perfect. I heard repeatedly that UT was the fastest growing state last year. (Of course birth rates affect that too.)
Just b/c CA isn't in the yellow, doesn't mean it's not losing people. That just means it's not among the top 10 in the rate of change. Since CA has such a large population, the rate of change can be less even when a high number of people move (in or out).

The data in Brookes Owl's link shows that California is one of the more balanced states (49.2% incoming & 50.8% outgoing).
Of course, illegals are unlikely to hire a mover.

This discussion is entirely meaningless until census data is available in 2010/2011. I've never once heard of a legitimate study using shipping patterns (featuring United Van Lines, no less) as a barometer for migration.

I checked Mayflower to see if they have something similar. They do, but they use a different time frame & don't present the data in as convenient a manner. What little information I could glean from their press release didn't seem to match up terribly well with the United information.

Mayflower and United are the same company. http://www.unigroupinc.com/

Combined with the fact that Mayflower doesn't have data consistent with United, that seems to indicate they are a very good proxy for government data.

I think I'd say that many folks in 2009, especially in the harder hit states, were less likely to hire a mover. Or at least a big one like United.

I agree with this statement. However, those who are likely to use movers are those that found a job in another state because they aren't paying for it. So there may be some merit in it.
