Haugabrook helps UNF men's basketball team win 5th in row
One streak ended for the University of North Florida men's basketball team and another continued Saturday night against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Kennesaw State.

Both were good news for the Ospreys.

UNF utilized a strong defensive effort in the second half to dispatch the visiting Owls 66-60. The victory extended the team's winning streak to five games. That's the longest for UNF since a six-game run during the 2003-04 season.

The victory also helped the Ospreys snap an 0-2 start in conference play.

"We have a lot of confidence right now," said UNF guard Brad Haugabrook, who led the team with 17 points and six assists. "We're buckling down defensively."

The Ospreys (6-7, 1-2) trailed 54-53 with 9:48 to play, but outscored the Owls 13-6 to close the game out. Kennesaw State (5-8, 1-2) was held without a field goal for a span of 4:51 during the stretch.

"I thought we set the tone defensively in the second half," UNF coach Matthew Driscoll said. "I tell our team all the time that if you guard and defend, you'll win."

UNF built a 63-56 lead, but the Owls managed to cut the advantage to 63-60 on a layup by Markeith Cummings with 2:13 to play. Those would be the final points the Ospreys allowed.

Forward Matt Sauey pulled down a tough defensive rebound and blocked a shot in the final minute to help preserve the win. The sophomore also added 14 points.

In all, UNF had four players score in double figures, with Eni Cuka (11) and Andy Diaz (10) joining Haugabrook and Sauey.

"We had 15 assists tonight on 22 buckets," Driscoll said. "That's huge. Our forwards are great passers as well, and we did a good job of finding the open shot."

The Ospreys took a 38-37 lead into halftime on Cuka's 3-pointer with nine seconds left on the clock. The second half featured 11 lead changes before UNF gained the upper hand for good with 8:19 to play.

UNF will host A-Sun rival Mercer (5-8, 1-2) at 7:45 p.m. on Monday.
