RE: Updated list of mid-season transfer players
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—Rutgers center Greg Echenique is transferring.

The Big East Conference school announced Friday that the sophomore from Venezuela informed the school of his intent to transfer and that he has been granted a conditional release.

Echenique started seven games before his season ended last month when he had surgery to repair a detached retina. He averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds, while shooting 61 percent from the field with 16 blocks.

Coach Fred Hill said, “Gregory has been a valuable member of our program. We are appreciative of his contributions at Rutgers and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

FGCU lands 6-9 transfer from Ole Miss

Florida Gulf Coast University coach Dave Balza has pulled in a big one.

Forward Kevin Cantinol, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound sophomore forward who played 19 games for Ole Miss last season, and played in the 14th-ranked Rebels' first two games this season, has joined the Eagles.

A native of the Caribbean island of Martinique, Cantinol, who redshirted as a freshman at Ole Miss, already is attending FGCU classes. He won't be eligible to play for FGCU until after next fall's finals, but he took his physical Thursday and the positive result came in Friday. He's eligible to practice.

Redshirt freshman guard Chris Baez dismissed from UCF men’s basketball team

UCF redshirt freshman guard Chris Baez has been dismissed from the men's basketball team for failing to take care of academic responsibilities.

The Knights now have two scholarships available after signing four players as part of the 2009 recruiting class.

Baez, a graduate of Gateway High in Kissimmee, appeared in 30 games and made two starts. He averaged 3.9 points and 1.8 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game. His career highlight was hitting the game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds to play at New Mexico.

He missed his entire true freshman season due to an injury.

After graduating from Gateway, Baez spent the 2006-07 at Lee Academy in Maine. He averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists at the school.

Baez was a standout shooter in high school, averaging 25.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game at Gateway. He set a single-game scoring record when he finished with 50 points against Cypress Creek. He was an Sentinel All-Central Florida second team honoree and earned a spot on the Florida Class 6A All-State second team.

Former OVC Player of the Week transfers to UNF

The North Florida men’s basketball team is prone to offensive slumps because it doesn’t have a go-to scorer. Look for that to change next season when Tennessee State transfer and 6-foot-3 guard Parker Smith, who scored 31 points against Austin Peay and 26 against Eastern Kentucky last year, becomes eligible.
