BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Bryce Brentz has received Pro-Line Athletic Preseason First Team All-America honors as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday.
Brentz, a utility player on the team since he is a dual threat at the plate and on the mound, and Matt Rice of Western Kentucky were the only Sun Belt Players on the First Team.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native led the nation in four statistical categories in 2009 while batting .465 with 107 hits, 28 home runs, 73 RBI and scored 60 runs.

Senior Kenneth Roberts was named to the Third Team after posting an 11-1 record with a 3.04 ERA and guiding the Blue Raiders to the Sun Belt Conference tournament title.

Those were the only three Sun Belt Players to receive NCBWA Preseason All-America honors.

By receiving Preseason All-America honors, Brentz and Roberts will be eligible to be nominated for the 24th annual Dick Howser Trophy, presented by the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Area Chamber of Commerce and voted upon by the NCBWA Membership. The Dick Howser Trophy will be awarded at a national media setting in 2010 at a date and site to be determined later.

Middle Tennessee will open the 2010 baseball season on Feb. 20 when travels to play Memphis in a three-game weekend series.
