I wouldn't be surprised if Bower has contacted the WKU Administration about the job. I know for a fact he has contacted another Sun Belt program through an intermediary and let it be known he has interest in the coaching position, if it becomes available. I would be surprised if he took the position immediately without waiting until the end of the season to see what other coaching vacancies would become open.

Fellas, don't count Wikipedia as any sort of reliable source. I could edit the WKU article and make it say that they never fired their coach to begin with. Or that they're undefeated this season. It doesn't make it true. Don't give it an ounce of credibility on an issue like this.

Raider, I promise you I don't trust wikipedia any further than I can throw it. But I was told this Bower-to-WKU rumor from someone that I Know did not learn about it from any online source. And then later I saw the wiki article that seemingly corroborates the rumor.

Brower was involved in the USA coaching search. He was easily the most prominent suspect at the time, but he seemed to want to wait a season or two before getting back into coaching. Supposedly he was only consulted about his opinion of candidates for the Jags, but it is highly probable he got some level of offer. Maybe now is the time for him to get back on the horse.

That is enough to get us over that 6 win hump. Most at ASU want that 7th win. It has been to long since we had a winning season.

What year was Ray Perkins the coach at ASU?

And why did he do it, since he (obviously, in retrospect) did not intend to stay?

I'll let arkstfan explain this one. I don't know the full story.

ASU still has a head coach, like the other program. We will see what happens at the end of the season. I don't see why Bowers wouldn't be on any SBC program's short list, if making the change.

Perkins was hired for the 1992 season. Our AD was going to hire Red Parker (Arkansas legend, former Clemson head coach who got fired when he refused to clean-out his staff to save his job, got fired as offensive coordinator at Ole Miss when Billy Brewer cleaned out his staff to save his job). Because there was no search, the board refused to approve him but said they would if he was still the top choice after a search. Larry Lacewell applied to return. Pat Collins tried to get the job as well. Turned into an election campaign with the three guys shaking hands and kissing babies at basketball games. Rumor was that Lacewell and Parker had a side deal that whoever got the job would hire the other as co-head coach. Parker would run offense, Lacewell defense and control their own staffs, with whoever named head coach making final call on recruiting.

Our AD at the time had been the #2 guy at Alabama, he called Perkins and he took the job.

After the season the AD was fired. Perkins asked to be made AD as well and ASU said "We will never have an active coach as AD, causes too big a risk other things don't get taken care of." One of the vice-presidents was named interim AD (real jerk to work with). Perkins found a job with the Patriots and quit 8 days before signing day.

If they had given him the AD job, I think he would have stayed several years. His recruits what few there were, ended up posting a 6-5 record as seniors.

About 7 years later when an AD was fired, head coach Joe Hollis was named AD. 01-wingedeagle

Not Sun Belt, but I've heard Bower's name mentioned for the UAB job if it were to become open.
