NEWTON, Kansas (10/20/09) - Senior Jordan Rose led the way on day two of the Shocker Invitational and the rest of the Mean Green women's golf team followed suit in helping North Texas capture first place at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas Tuesday afternoon.
As a team the Mean Green won with a two-day score of 633 (+57) despite horrible wind conditions. North Texas finished 21 shots ahead of second-place Wichita State (654) and 27 shots ahead of third-place UMKC (660).
The win at the Shocker Invitational is North Texas' first tournament victory since the North Texas Women's Golf Classic in 2006.
Rose won her first career individual title by shooting a 148 (+4), including a tournament best 73 on Tuesday. The senior from Rockwall, Texas had the most birdies in the tournament (5) and second-most pars (24).
"Today was as tough a weather day as I can remember," North Texas head coach Jeff Mitchell said. "It is great we were able to win the tournament. I was able to witness one of the best rounds of golf I have seen in all my years of coaching in Jordan's 73. That was just amazing. I think this will be a great learning experience for us in the future, too."
Both Kelsey Kipp and Maggie Noel finished in the top ten by tying for eighth place shooting 163 respectively (+19). Sophomore Addison Long and senior Janna Golden also finished in the top 15 by tying for 11th place, each shooting a two-day score of 165 (+21).
The Mean Green will hit the links again next Monday when they travel to Fort Myers, Florida to compete in the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational Oct. 26-27.
