Mens BB Jags to lose 3 players for upcoming season
MOBILE, Ala. --- Three University of South Alabama men’s basketball players will miss the 2009-10 season, head coach Ronnie Arrow announced Monday.
Freshman Andre Gowins (Gautier, Miss.) and junior Brandon Nobles (Prichard, Ala.) will be out with knee injuries while freshman Augustine Rubit (Houston, Texas) will miss the year due to NCAA compliance issues.
Gowins picked up an ACL tear in his right knee during preseason drills while Nobles’ left knee was a preexisting condition that occurred prior to his arrival at South Alabama. Both had surgery in September.
Rubit did not meet requirements for initial eligibility but, due to circumstances beyond the student-athlete’s control, has been granted a waiver by the NCAA to practice this season.
“This will allow Aug to get a full year under his belt, both academically and in practice, so that he will be better prepared for next season.”
Both Gowins and Rubit will have four years of eligibility remaining.
“These two young men are definitely two big parts of our future,” said Arrow.

Wow... That's a hell of a blow.
So much for my sleeper pick in the East. Losing the talent they did in the offseason, plus a quarter of the roster going into this season... That's a lot, even for a coach as good as Arrow, to overcome.

Were any of them expected to see significant amounts of playing time?

All three are young big-un's and most likely Ronnie would have red shirted at least two of them. Rubit was the most talented of the three and the most heavily recruited.

I believe Nobles is a walk-on shooting guard from a nearby JC. He can contribute but the two inside players were better. That being said, even with them we were going to be more perimeter oriented this year.
