RE: Gov. signs $31 billion construction plan
Is the Stevens building relevant? I just finished NIU and never had a class there. In fact, I don't know anyone who had class there. Serious question.
Also would anyone even want to have a class at Cole? I lived right behind Cole as everything happened and would feel weird about having class there. I know there was a vote amongst the student body regarding what to do with the building, but I don't remember the results. It is in my opinion that the students who voted for a simple renovation are being passive and don't yet realize how eerie it would be to actually have class there. I think this is a situation where Peters should have taken the reigns and do away with Cole on his own accord. Sure students may complain, but just think if you got your schedule and one of your classes was in Cole Hall, you would feel at least a little weird about having class there.
It seems the pittance we received could be well served elsewhere.

The Stevens building is used for anthropology and theater classes.

Professors will still be there...
I agree with NIUgrad, i never want to step foot in Cole Hall again. Partly, that's why i voted for the building to be demolished. I felt that letting the building continue to stand represented a terrible event that should not represent our school or community. The other reason is because its an old, ugly, and outdated building that already needed to be replaced. Hopefully the renovation makes it look totally different than it was. If i had a class that was supposed to be in there i would drop it. I hope the school will be sincere enough to help accommodate students or professors who do not wish to take/teach classes in there when the building is in use again.
As for the Stevens Building, that place needs renovation bad. Its a dump and NIU has been requesting money for it for a decade or longer.

yes but the profs are paid to do their jobs. I don't disagree that it should be demo'd and rebuilt, its badly out of date, but until thats funded just do what you can and use it.

The professors can still do their job and teach the class. But if a professors wants to teach his/her class in another building i would hope the university accommodates their request.
In the end, the $40 million to knock down Cole Hall and build a brand new building with more space doesn't seem like much when schools like SIU, WIU, UI, etc. are asking for $60-70 million for individual buildings that aren't as important to their universities.
