I disagree with his premise.

Winning a national title isn't likely nor is it impossible.

2006, Boise went from unranked pre-season to the BCS. They didn't crack the poll until week 3. The year before they started pre-season #18. If they had started at 18, they might have had a shot of progressing to a 1-2 in a season without an undefeated team.

The only way a non-AQ can make the title game is:
1. Need to come off a great season.
2. Be rated in pre-season poll preferably top 10, top 15 still possible.
3. Go undefeated.
4. Get the key breaks of people ahead of you losing.
5. Don't let a team below you surge past you.
