Economists, weathermen, and Supreme Court judges. The only jobs I can think of where you can be wrong way more than you are right, and it be ok.

2 types of economist:

1) those that know they don't know everything

2) those that don't know they don't know everything

the latter group is more annoying

If the recession goes into a full blown depression, you can say the recession is effectively over. It does work in that direction too...

There have been several recessions that didn't materialize into depressions. It comes down to how the government reacts. ....and it's not looking good.

Yes. It does. This isn't a pass or fail exam. It's pass, fail, or drag everyone else down with you when you fail...

I'm not going to argue this insane point. Just because you would rather say we've moved from a recession to depression, does NOT MEAN THAT YOU CAN SAY THE RECESSION IS OVER, it only means it got WORSE. And on the obverse, when you say "the depression is over we are back to a recession", parsing words does not make it any better.

RE: 9 out of 10 economists say recession ends this year
If the recession does end the recovery would be short lived and here's why.

Oil hit a six month high today at $64/barrel. Gasoline here in NC is $2.44/gallon. When Oil was $140/barrel gasoline in NC was $4.00/gallon. Using the current multiple IF oil hits $140/barrel gasoline would be $5.39/gallon. Talk about loss of disposable income. I'm sure even liberals remember Obama's statement, "I don't have a problem with $4 or $5 per gallon gasoline, I just wish the increase had been more gradual." Other than speculation there is no valid business reason for a nearly 50% increase in Oil prices in roughly 3 months, where is the liberal outrage?

Five reasons the US economy will continue decline even if there is a short lived recovery.

1) Energy Cost, do the math if the average two car family uses 30 gallons a week @ $2/gallon that's $260/mo @ $4.50/gallon that's $650/mo $400/mo less to spend on durable goods and other retail products.

2) TAXES, TAXES, TAXES to pay for his Socialist programs everyone will have to pay more taxes, or everyone with Income above $100k annually will have a 60% tax bracket.

3) Gubment Debt with no growth in the economy the Gubment can't raise taxes high enough to pay for the Obamination of Socialist programs. The interest on the national debt will soon be the largest budget item as the US credit rating goes subprime.

4) Inflation, low or no factory out put for 3 to 6 months will eventually mean too few products in the market for all the money the Gubment prints, it's simple Suply and Demand.

5) Fear of the Gubment, after seeing how the Gubment treated Bondholders and Equity Owners of GM and Chrysler, why would anyone be willing to invest in risky companies? Look for several US Icons to fail over the next 5 years (Circuit City and KB Toys are small compared to what's to come).

And yet so many seem to wholeheartedly believe economic theories like they're gospel, when they're put forth by the same economists that can't agree on anything, and can't actually predict anything accurately.

Right now we're working on "talk on the street" and confidence levels. If you think you've seen the worst, just wait until Obama's fiscal policies.......are actually IMPLEMENTED. Then, it's not gonna f'n matter a hill of beans about someone's opinion or confidence levels. If they're broke, they're f'n broke.

I cannot understand why you libs believe government actually stimulates the economy and not the private sector. That has to be some kind of voluntary ignorance.

In the case of a war though, the government is generally the one that needs huge amounts of material to prosecute the war. That creates demand that the private sector profits from, and it stimulates the economy. If we hadn't gone to war, the demand wouldn't be there.
But that's done out of necessity of course. If it wasn't, the government would (until recently) never get the votes to pass the huge spending bills.
