The NIT doesn't look so bad anymore
The NIT doesn't look so bad anymore
Posted by BKoch at 3/13/2009 2:42 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

One good thing about the CBI and the new CollegeInsider.com Tournament is that it makes the NIT look a little more relevant. There was a time when being shuffled off to the NIT was like a slap in the face, but now if you go to the NIT you can at least say, “Well, at least we’re not playing in the CBI or that CollegeInsider.com thing.” The NIT, now run by the NCAA, actually has some history and plays it semifinals and finals at Madison Square Garden and has its games shown on ESPN.

So will UC make it to the NIT? Yes, according to the web site NIT-ology.com, whose existence proves without a doubt that there really is a web site for everything. The web site has UC listed as a No. 7 seed playing No. 2 seed Virginia Tech. Of course, that means practically nothing. We’ll find out Sunday night.

I would maintain, though, that if UC does make it to the NIT, it should be considered another step in the rebuilding of the program. That doesn’t excuse the poor finish or the embarrassing loss to DePaul, but at the start of the season if someone had said that UC would make it to the NIT having played the entire season without its starting point guard, most UC fans would have considered that progress. Of course, now in light of the free fall this team has made from NCAA Tournament bubble team to NIT bubble team, that doesn’t seem so great.

But, look at it this way. At least they’re not going to the CBI or that other thing.

The Bracket Project has UC out of the NIT. I still think the cat should accept CBI bid. If you are not in the NCAA Tournament who care which runner-up tournament you play. By the way, I do not agree with their evaluation of teams. Please explain why Georgetown had a better season than UC did.

Bracket project updated today on the 13th. Altough I do not agree with the picks. I would rank UC ahead of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Houston, Stanford, Nebraska, Georgetown, and Washington State. Heck UC did beat UAB, ND, G'Town (2) , WVU, Miss State, and UNLV. those seven top 100 wins should count for something....more like would have ment something if the cats would have won their last three games. Oh well.

I'm sorry. I'll take the invite to the NIT, but if I were the NIT I wouldn't offer it.

There is no reason to think the Bearcats will win a single game.

I completely agree.

There have been enough chances in the last two weeks to regroup and forget about a bad loss, but it hasn't and likely won't happen this season.

I said it before in an earlier post, but I feel the season is over. I am rather upset the Mick would not want to play in the CBI unless there is a good reason not to play. To me playing in any tournament gives you extra practice time. I have a gut feeling that pratice a few more weeks of practice will not get us to the promised land next year. The anwser could be goodbye to certain sophmores and hello new recruits. Our sophmore class is more of an anchor than anything else due to the talent level and size of the class. The good news is that I believe this years recruits were better than last years. The funny thing is I actually believe Mick's first class had better players than his second class. Vaughn, Williamson, and Warren are better players than our rising juniors.

The reason is simple. The NIT gets some press and has some decent teams in it who may or may not be rebuilding. The NIT is a tournament that has teams in it every year that "should have" made the NCAA tourney. If you don't get in, then it is on with recruiting. NIT hangs a banner and shows that a rebuilding process is under way. The other tourneys are pointless and are a product of our society that rewards everyone for something.

in all honesty, I'd rather they not get invited, this team needs an enema, not an NIT berth, put me out of my misery and let them work towards next year.

I would like to see the Cats get an invite to the NIT.

Might shed a little more light on where their heads are at. It also might give more of a read on the situation with ALVIN!!!!!! (I can hear the chipmunk music in the background).

If we get an NIT bid and lose....is that worse than getting an NIT bid and turning it down?

You can't decline an NIT bid anymore since the NCAA took it over. If you are selected, you are required to play.

If they get a NIT bid, put yourself out of your misery. Don't watch.

At least we aren't UK. When their bid comes in, they can't even play at Rupp Arena. Its booked that week so they have to play at something called Memorial that only sits like 7,000.

That's probably a few thousand more seats than they'll need for that crowd.

The rest of the fan base will be asking WVU fans the best approach for death threats and For Sale/Vacancy signs. I'm guessing there's a good chance Billy drinks out of the comfort of a hotel room.

RE: The NIT doesn't look so bad anymore
As far as playing in the NIT, I'm not sure what problems we expect to solve in a 28 week off season that can't be solved in 26 weeks.

Whether or not someone can stand to watch them play is another story.
