The Right Players
Aside from last night's shooting spree, we're a poor offensive team. I think it's because Shields either can't recruit the higher-rated, skill players, or only goes after the tough, workhorse-type players.
The coach is a master at finding people who bust their tails every single game. Fowler, Edwards, Mouzy, etc. but we're never in the upper-tier of the league in terms of recruiting classes. Maybe he should concentrate just a little of his effort towards recruiting those types of players, and then fill in the rest of the roster with lunch pail types.
He also at least needs to get an assistant who can run an adequate offense with some movement and screens. In my mind, if basketball were like football Sheilds would be the ideal defensive coordinator.

Steve was a football player and coached high school football early in his career. I would agree. He would be a heck of a defensive coordinator.
I would assume his offense resembled Woody Hayes "3 yards and a cloud of dust". Conservative. Is that bad? Well we've won a lot of games. But it's limitations are that a team with bigger and better players won't allow you to score a lot of points on the inside unless you can score some on the outside, and our offense, as you and others have mentioned, doesn't lend itself to ball screens for the shooters on the perimeter, or kicking the ball back out for open shots once it goes into the paint. When you see the ball movement by teams like Western and Troy, you understand why they are hard for us to beat. Plus they have a lot of great players. Can't underestimate talent.
