My wife and 10 year old son were watching some program on TV that featured Obama's call for community service and showed film of Obama painting a homeless shelter the day before he took office. My son asked how come the people living there couldn't paint it. What do I tell him?

It was homeless "teen" shelter and they were helping some of the residents with the painting....Im sure it was a photo op...but..I guess to be fair you also need to mention to your son that the Obama's also visited wounded troops before going there.....hey...Just saying.

Excellent question, since the Lowe's close to my home advertises that it donates paint and supplies to charitable orgnaizations. I think the kids did most of the painting, but that wasn't shown on TV as soon as BO went on camera.

The TV sound bite was supposed to illustrate the MLK Holiday as a "National Day of Service" which is a twist. When it first became a Federal Holiday, it was more of a Civil Rights occasion.

Civil Rights now morphs into "National Service"... which given Obama's past calls for mandatory "National Service" for High Schoolers and College Students, scares the Hell out of me.

I think you tell him that gov't grows big when it keeps people from the freedom of helping themselves. Those who want big government want control, and they want to disable people from taking care of themselves. Even from the most mundane tasks.

Id say he f'd up on that one....He went to the Comander in Chief thing first and had lots of wounded soldiers at it...but..Id agree this was a mistake.
