RE: Hell
You have no idea whether that is true or not, cb. Obama could end up being another Carter.

You have to forgive cb, he really just posts to give him a reason to use the emoticons.

Yeah, even though I am a Barack supporter I do feel that I must hold my judgements until his first major issue.

No hell for me, unless you define hell as having to listen to cheering for no reason.

Being another Carter--or even another Shrub--is at the upper end of my expectations for Obama.
I hope and pray for better, for the sake of the country, but I don't expect better.
Like Perot in 1992 I see increased export sales as the key to economic recovery, and the situation is worse now than then. I don't see Obama's economic policy doing much for that.

No, this just proves you're a spoiled brat. You have had, at the most, mild discomfort over the past 8 years, and I doubt even that.
You live in luxury and ease that even US citizens from 40-50 years ago would have admired...and most generations would be in awe of.
But despite that, you complain incessantly, for no other reason than you don't get your way.
If you really want the shrewd, intelligent people who show restraint, compassion, and benevolence to become like you, you'll then see what oppression really looks like.

50 years ago there were more middle class jobs around, gold and silver still backed the dollar, and a man could buy a nice house for his family for the price of a mid-sized vehicle today. The house my parents bought in 1959 for $8000, is now appraised at nearly $200,000.
Which is the easier purchase?
A. $8000 house in 1959
B. $200,000 house in 2009?
Anyone who answers B is a moron...
In 1969 I bought my first car for $1000. It was used - a year old VW. A similar car now would cost 15-20 times as much...
$1000 in 1969 beats $15,000-$20,000 today, since more people had jobs that allowed them to make such purchases. I seriously doubt the veracity of any statement claiming that we have it easier than people of 40-50 years ago. I just don't see it...

Taking into account the ease of today's credit markets (at least as of 12 months ago) now compared to then, you could make the argument that B is the answer. A few years ago, I had moved to Atlanta on a 3-6 month contract and was pre-approved for $280k (that was the highest I would even consider, but sensed they would've substantially more, as stupid as that would have been), all in spite of the fact that we had not sold our house in Dallas.
The same credit market both distorts the answer to your rhetorical question is also partly responsible for the appraisal on your parents home.
None of which is to say your point isn't valid. The CPI indicates $1k in 1969 is $5800 in 2008 dollars, $8k in 1959 is about $58k now.
