I am back!
I had lost my password and did not bother to get another until today! I have been reading the posting though. MY QUESTION TO ROCKENROLLER, WHY ARE YOU PISSED AT NMSU ? WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO YOU? I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT THE FIRST YEAR IN THE WAC HAS BEEN GREAT FOR NMSU. The competition has been great in basketball. I recall our first few years in the Belt. We had two or three good teams in the Belt and then the quality dropped off after that. In the WAC the teams are a lot tougher and the arenas are much larger.
Go NMSU Aggies make noise in the WAC tournamnet!!

I think some Hawaii and a lot of Fresno State fans don't like NMSU because of UTEP. UTEP was a thorn in their sides and they are taking it out on us. Someone at the Hawaii game had a sign that said Lost Causes on it. Or maybe it is because a lot of fans of the older WAC schools don't care for the 3 newbies. Especially when we beat them.

No Hawaii or Fresno fan is pissed at UTEP. Sure, UTEP was pretty good right when they were leaving the conference, but they were conference doormats for most of the 37 years while they were in the conference!

Obviously you're talking about football, right?

I thought Tulsa won C-USA football, while Memphis and UAB are winning in the hoops.

Mainly, yeah. I know UTEP had basketball in the 80's but Fresno/Hawaii were never good at basketball at all, and never had rivalries with UTEP, period.

Hey Miners...how do you like the CUSA? You weren't football champions and it doesn't look like a 3 bid conference for the NCAA. Do you miss the WAC?

We love CUSA. Six bowl tie-ins and significantly more TV money and exposure. Still I do miss the rivalries. However our budget is up to 24 Million (second only to Memphis in CUSA), when in the WAC we were at around 14 Million.

So would you consider you are underperforming considering your budget?

Two straight bowls and two straight NCAAs, looking at the NIT this year. Would've liked to see another NCAA bid, but we had some tough breaks this season in bball. Underperforming?

I think CUSA will see their TV money start to dry up because I doubt the current configuration of CUSA will be able to negotiate a similar tv contract. As for the bowls....The New Orleans, GMAC, Hawaii, and the Fort Worth Bowl all have minmum payouts ($750K - or $375K per team), which...after travel and spliting between 12 teams....amounts to almost nothing.
The Liberty is $1.35M, which is decent, but that still only amounts to roughly $40K to $50K per school. Nevada's three games in the NCAA tourney two years ago brought in more (net) than all those bowl games put together. So, is it really the best bet?[/quote]

I believe the Ft. Worth Bowl is going to the MWC.
The Hawaii Bowl is courting the Pac-10. The Pac-10 is scheduled to play in the Hawaii Bowl twice during this current contract.
If everything works out well, the Hawaii Bowl will become a WAC vs. Pac-10 Bowl when the next contract is written.

The Ft. Worth is MWC vs. CUSA. All CUSA bowls, including the Hawaii bowl extended their contract last September.

How many tie-ins PER YEAR does CUSA have? Some of the contracts, including the Hawaii Bowl are for every other year, at most. I'm guessing the wording of released details is vague enough that it's hard to give a firm answer, but would you say 4 is pretty close?

I went back and looked up the press releases. There are no specifics. The last agreement, with the Houston Bowl, is the only one that states that it's not guaranteed every year. According to that release, CUSA is guaranteed at least one appearance in the next 4 years.
Here are the CUSA press releases:

Thanks. I knew there was at least one bowl other than Hawaii with that kind of wording but couldn't remember which one. As mentioned above, the Hawaii bowl contract calls for getting a Pac10 team two out of the four years, although I guess there's no guarantee that a Pac10 team will be available.
If the other 3 tie-ins are all yearly, then that looks like approx. 4 per year to me, with 3 or 5 being possible depending on circumstances.
