Assuming that Idaho is indeed invited to the WAC this week and assuming that they improve their facilities (ie their stadium), what are your thoughts about a gold field? It could be a good marketing move for the state of Idaho by having the only schools in the country with strangely colored football fields. It might help with national attention the way Boise is known because of their 'smurf turf'. I have a feeling that Boise fans would feel that Idaho would be trying to steal their thunder, but it is just a fun idea. What do you guys think: interesting, or stupid idea?

from what i understand, the NCAA won't allow it. after BSU installed the blue 20+ years ago, the NCAA banned the idea (and we got grandfathered in).
but it's come up with other teams. when clemson played in the H-bowl, their board debated installing an orange field. same with georgia tech -- they wondered what a black and gold field would look like.
i don't think idaho would do it, personally. it would be a "me, too" move -- and i don't think the vandals would want to be associated with boise state, particularly with regards to copycatting their primary rival.
BTW: if one more person suggests the blue turf "hurts their eyes," maybe they should check out the french open this week. the bright orange clay doesn't hurt my eyes, and it's a much brighter and warmer color than blue...

Sorry, bro, but you are 100 percent incorrect here. I've contacted the NCAA myself about this (as it has come up repeatedly in the past). THERE IS NO RULE BY THE N.C.A.A. concerning the color of the field of play for football. You can have a PINK field if you want to.
Secondly, there is no "grandfathering" going on regarding Boise State, and the NCAA never "banned" anyone from having a field colored something other than green. Anyone who wants to have a field in something other than green is free to do so. Period.
P.S. Take a good look at U.T.E.P.'s "new" field. If you STILL don't believe this and prefer to live in the land of fantasy, contact the NCAA yourself and ask them about this. You will get the same answer that I did several years ago.

I'm curious to know how you think Idaho would be able to improve their facilities, primarily a new football stadium. They have no money to do so and they are currently involved in a financial scandal called the University Place scandal that makes Fresno State look choir boys by comparison.
As to the gold field idea, that's rather doubtful for a number of reasons. :snore:

i don't live in any fantasy world. i was going by what i've heard time and time again here in town -- which, naturally, has a biased slant.
frankly, i wish the NCAA WOULD ban artificial surfaces of all kinds unless the team had a dome. football was meant to be played on grass, not plastic.
