A few years ago there was a map going around that showed where the teams and conferences were located. I created a new one for the 2005 realignment to see how it looks now.

Sure shows how tight geographically the MAC is among the non BCS but exposes us for LaTech and Hawaii and CUSA for ECU, UTEP. Marshall, etc and MWC for taking TCU.
Clearly, with the WAC and MWC as the best of the non BCS, regionality aint all that. It would be nice but it doesn't dicatate conference strength which should be the main focus in a BCS dominated world.

Wow, nice job Brick! It gives you a great perspective of the natural rivalries that could develope. Boise State has Nevada, Idaho and Utah State and of course Fresno...another 3.5 hours past Reno...

Apparently it's murky.

some random, pointless observations:
there are twice as many 1A teams in idaho (population: 1.35 million) as there are in missouri (population 5.7 million) or wisconsin (population: 5.5 million) or minnesota (population: 1 TUfan, formerly, allegedly).
there are 10 1A teams in texas, 8 in ohio, 7 in florida, 7 in california -- that's 32 of the 117 (27%) of d1A teams in four states.
new england, a region rich in history and tradition, has only 2 d1A college football teams (uconn and bc).
9 states do not have a d1a football school (alaska, montana, north dakota, south dakota, maine, vermont, new hampshire, rhode island and delaware).
the colors are very nice.
