We now have 2 MAC faithful from here that just began using their computer to cure cancer on team Folding@NCAAbbs.
As for the rest of you non-cancer-curing slackers ---> here's a quick chance for redemption, lest you go to purgatory :D
What in the world is this thing??
Folding@Home is a project ran by Stanford to simulate the folding of proteins. This is directly useful in curing alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis, cancer, sars, mad cow disease, and other killers.
OK. I'm interested. I have more questions though.
Will it slow down your computer: NO. Even if you have an old crapbox, you will suffer ZERO performance loss
Does it pose a security risk: NO. Stanford uses security codes for every work unit.
Can I trust this: YES. It's ran by Stanford University, and co-sponsored by Intel. It has been featured on Slashdot, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, the NY Times, and others.
Do I want to set this up at work: NOT WITHOUT YOUR BOSS'S PERMISSION.
OK. Is this hard to install? How do I set it up.
Time to setup: 30 seconds broadband, 90 seconds dial up
Simple Install (more advanced users, see link below this portion)
Step 1) Download this <a href='http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/Folding@Home4.EXE' target='_blank'>http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/r...lding@Home4.EXE</a>
Step 2) Install
Step 3) Run
Step 4) Put in the following info:
- Username: (Whatever you want, just make it unique-ish)
- Team Number: 33100
Step 5) You're done. No... really. That's it.
For those more savvy users, you can install Folding@Home as a service, which is more efficient use of your cpu and it doesn't even take up an icon in the tray.
