NCAA FB WEEK SIX PREVIEW
-Kentucky will try and keep their unbeaten season alive in a huge conference road test against South Carolina. Florida, Georgia and South Carolina all have conference losses already, so the East Division is entirely up for grabs. A win for Kentucky would be a huge step forward, and for the time being put them in the drivers seat to win the division. South Carolina struggles on offense, but plays pretty good defense, so it will be interesting to see how they match up with the high powered offense of Kentucky.

-Purdue will host Ohio State in this week’s only match-up between two unbeatens. Although Purdue has yet to lose, they have not looked nearly as impressive as Ohio State, especially on defense. A win for the Buckeyes keeps them squarely in the BCS picture, as well as in the discussion for the national title. Due to Purdue’s weak schedule, not too many people are all that excited about them, but that would definitely change if they can pull off the win today.

-Florida lost to Auburn last week, but will still be in the national championship discussion if they could pull off the win at LSU today. That would put them first in line among the one loss teams if they can pull it off. Florida struggled in their last road game, and with the exception of the first half against Tulane LSU has looked fantastic for the entire season. LSU is actually ranked #1 in the AP poll right now, but only by one vote. One would assume they’d hold on to that if they manage to beat the Gators.

-Rutgers is hosting Cincinnati. Cincinnati has looked great this season, but their opponents have only combined for two wins against FBS teams, so this is a real test for them. As for Rutgers, they are trying to rebound from last week’s somewhat surprising loss against Maryland, and look to move back up the rankings and stay in the Big East title hunt. A win for Cincinnati would also put them in the BCS discussion, which is huge for a school that has never really been on the national scene before.

-Kansas and Kansas State square off in a huge rivalry game in the Big Twelve North. Neither team has a conference loss and Kansas is unbeaten on the year. K State is coming off a surprising road win against Texas, in a game that they actually won very handily. Expect a very intense atmosphere for this one. It’s one of the more high stakes games of this series in quite some time. A win for the Jayhawks would likely put them in the top 25.

-Missouri is hosting Nebraska in another hugely important Big Twelve North game. Right now I’d say both teams have a shot at winning it, along with Kansas and Kansas State, so we should learn a lot about the division today. Missouri is unbeaten, but is still only ranked in the teens. A win against Nebraska should move them up, not to mention be a huge step forward in terms of winning the division.

-The Red River Rivalry lost some of it’s fire with both Oklahoma and Texas going down in conference games last week, but it’s still a huge game because both still control their own destiny in the Big Twelve South. The winner will get their momentum back whereas the loser will have to overcome two straight conference losses, which could knock them out of the BCS picture.

-Illinois got a huge win last week against Penn State, but still didn’t crack the top 25. They have another big game at home this week against Wisconsin. Wisconsin is highly ranked, but they are not invincible and Illinois is certainly capable of beating them, especially considering that they have the home field advantage. Not only would a win vault the Illini into the top 25, it would vault them into contention for the Big Ten Title.

-West Virginia travels to Syracuse. As odd as this is Syracuse actually has a one game lead in the conference standings. I don’t see that lasting for too long, though. West Virginia should win in a blowout.

-Maryland got a huge win last week at Rutgers after dropping two straight. They play Georgia Tech in a big game as far as jockeying for bowl position is concerned.

-Wyoming and TCU square off in a huge game that could impact the MWC title. TCU’s defense is still very strong, whereas Wyoming appears to be strong all the way around. A win for the Cowboys puts them in the drivers seat, and could result into them cracking the rankings if they keep it up. Although it is the conference opener for Wyoming, the game would be a statement that they are capable of winning the league.

-Houston travels to Alabama in an intriguing out of conference game. It’s one of the best teams from Conference USA with a chance to knock off a bowl caliber SEC team. Houston loses some momentum after their loss at East Carolina last week, but they should still be jacked way up for this opportunity.

-Both Iowa and Penn State are looking for their first Big Ten win. The two square off against each other Saturday afternoon.

-Clemson suffered a surprising loss to Georgia Tech last week and needs is hosting Virginia Tech today in a huge ACC game. Clemson’s offense had been excellent until last week. Virginia Tech has struggled somewhat, but they have been improving since their blowout loss to LSU and a win today would keep them at the top of the ACC Coastal Division. Clemson needs to win because the way Boston College has been playing a two game deficit may be too much to overcome.

-Akron travels to Western Michigan for a huge game in the MAC. It could be a preview of the MAC championship game. Both teams are considered conference favorites and are 1-0 in league play. Both teams could end up making bowls, but the winner of this game will obviously be out of the gate quicker. Akron’s defense has been tough this year and that will help them out today.

-UCF will travel to East Carolina to take on an ECU team that’s coming off a big win against Houston a week ago. A UCF would put them in the drivers seat of the East Division. They would be the only team without a conference loss, and they’d have a two game lead over one of the better teams in ECU, as well as the tiebreaker. This is a very pivotal game for ECU because a win puts them in first place and back in control of their own destiny. Both teams will likely make bowls considering C-USA has six bowl tie-ins, but the loser will have a difficult time making the conference title game.

-Hawaii is playing Utah State, which is their fifth game against a team that is winless against FBS teams. Nevertheless, a win will probably move them further up the rankings.
