GAME NOTES: Getting an early jump on the first full weekend of college football, the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Miners of Texas-El Paso set the tone at Frank Kush Field in Tempe on Thursday night. They may not have been the worst team in the Western Athletic Conference last season, but the Miners came pretty close as they finished with a disappointing 2-11 mark. The victories came over weak opponents such as SMU and I-AA foe Sam Houston State, while defeats were handed to UTEP by the usual suspects like Rice, Boise State and Tulsa, as well as a sneaky bunch from I-AA Cal Poly. With the lackluster effort the Miners decided it was time for a change at head coach, dropping Gary Nord in favor of the notoriously known Mike Price. As for the Sun Devils, they too had trouble in their own conference (Pac-10), winning just two of eight outings and losing all four of their road contests against league opponents. Victories over I-AA Northern Arizona and Utah State to kick off the '03 campaign did little to impress fans, especially since there were seven losses in the next nine games on the horizon. Overall, ASU finished just 5-7 last year after placing third in the league in '02 to the surprise of many. Heading into this matchup, the Sun Devils hold a sizeable advantage over UTEP in the all-time series with a mark of 32-13-3.

Sorry, I got to go with Dirk and the boys in this one.
My daughter lives in Phoenix and I just got back from a visit there. Had a few beers and wings at the Hooters just 3 blocks down from the stadium.

It is so hot down there, that you have to drink beer all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
