Early to rise, early to play for Boise State, San Jose State
By Evan Millar, USA TODAY
Fans hoping to tailgate before No. 15 Boise State's game at San Jose State on Nov. 13 might have to arrive at sunrise.
The Western Athletic Conference moved the kickoff to 9:07 a.m. PT — five hours earlier than scheduled — so the game could be broadcast on ESPN2. Both schools had to agree to the change, which gives the Broncos (8-0) their fifth national TV appearance this season.

The game will be shown at noon ET, meaning more fans across the country can watch. "It's a time when college football fans are more than likely going to be able to watch it," WAC Commissioner Karl Benson says. "The game wouldn't be on TV if it wasn't a 9 a.m. game. In our opinion, it's better than a 9 p.m. (Pacific) start."

While the early start could make it harder for fans to attend, it is not the only breakfast-time start this season. California beat Air Force 56-14 in Colorado Springs on Sept. 4, a game also on ESPN2 that started at 10 a.m. Mountain.

"Are we pushing the envelope as to whether it's a fan-friendly time? The answer is it probably isn't a fan-friendly time," Benson says. "But we've become accustomed to evaluating the benefit of national television (in relation) to what it does to the fans. We certainly are not going to do this on a regular occasion."

Said Boise State athletics director Gene Bleymaier, "Hopefully, it will give us some exposure on the East Coast. I think you can turn it into a novelty event."

Boise State is 13-0 on ESPN or ESPN2.

As a Bronco fan in Southern California, I have really enjoyed having the Broncos on ESPN all season. I have picked up game plan for the days when they are not on ESPN. I think I have missed two games this year. But listened to Paul J. on the computer.

Sad thing about the game time change is that it WILL have an negative impact on attendance!

And San Jose needs all the help they can muster for fans in the seats.
