The future of WAC basketball is looking very good. From a quality standpoint, losing UTEP hurts, but IMO USU is an upgrade. And if Theus gets it going in Las Cruces like so many are expecting, then I expect the new WAC to be better than before. IMO, Nevada, USU, FSU, LT, and NMSU all have stellar recruiting classes, and I could be selling Hawaii short by saying that. The other 3 (BSU, SJS, Idaho) are all respectable.

NJCAA All-Americans (these are off the top of my head, so correct me if I'm wrong):
1st team: Spicer (USU), Richardson (LT), Hosley (2003-04) (FSU)
2nd team: McDowell (LT)
3rd team: Lojeski (UH)
2nd team Div II: Ikovlev

Nevada notes:
Johnson: considered by some to be the best JC player in CA (CA schools are not part of NJCAA); averaged 5 blk per game last year
Ikovlev: figures to give the Wolf Pack much needed help from 3-pt range
Mayfield: highly recruited, athletic, and big; some uncertainty about eligibility, but coach Fox said he's still coming
Phillips: great SR year; held his own, and then some, against Seattle's best
Nevada also adds to last year's roster: Kemp (missed last year due to ACL surgery) and Burleson (greyshirt)

Hopefully we'll get some more input now that more people are reading this board:

GO PACK!!! GO WAC!!!

For Boise:

Matt Nelson was Big Sky freshman of the year last year. Lots of potential but we won't see it until the 2006 season. A tough bruiser.

Anthony Thomas was a top50 senior in Texas. Hard nosed on ball defender who shoots about 45% from 3. Future PG.

Kurt Cunningham played in the small school division in Indiana, but his team regularly beat the top teams. Runs the floor, nice shooting touch, etc. Was McD's nominee. BIG body kid, just what's been missing from our program. Probable rehshirt.

Tyler Tiedeman will come right in and play. Great shooter. HS baseball start as well as hoops. Coaches love this kid.

One more scholarship to give I think and there's at least one walkon that the coaches are whispering about that we don't have details on yet.

The MWC is weak in hoops and they know it. Nevada has been taking care of UNLV, USU has had the number of Utah over the past 7 years, and BYU over the past 4 years. If Reggie Theus turns NMSU around and whoops on the Lobos we will be taking out all of their top teams. It is up to you Southern Ags. We have a little more work to do with football, but in basketball we already have passed them. Let's just leave no doubt. :D

Anyways USU's class will be somewhat staggered. Newbold and Bendall won't be on the court for 2-3 years due to LDS missions. Some may redshirt, but probably not Spicer or Peterson. They were the top two JC players and will have an instant impact. If Watson qualifies he will also be a great player. (Second best Freshman in the MWC after Andrew Bogut in 2003-04.) We will have him and Jaycee Caroll, the Big West Freshman of the Year, from Evanston, WY in our backcourt. Thanks Steve McLain for the two players, both could have been cowboys. 03-cool

Within a couple of years, the WAC could have six teams as good as anyone in the MWC. That may sound like a pie-in-the-sky statement, but it's really not that far-fetched.

Nevada and USU will probably be in contention for WAC titles for the foreseeable future.

Fresno is a wildcard right now, but they're putting together enough talent that they could be right there battling for the top spot. And they're young. Only time will tell how their players come together under Cleveland.

NMSU has everyone doing backflips. Warranted or not, again only time will tell how things fall into place.

LaTech is an intriguing case. They return two of the best players in the WAC (Millsap and Haskins). And they're bringing in 1st and 2nd team JC all-americans. My hunch is they're too lacking in size to compete for the top, but who knows?

Hawaii is always solid. Last year was a strange one, when they went undefeated in pre-conference play, then struggled the rest of the way. They tend to get a lot of talented foreigners. I would never count them out.

As for the rest, well...

Boise is only two years removed from an outstanding year, but I'm not sold on them getting back to that level. They lose Blackburn and Ellis, who I'd call their most valuable players last year. The Broncos are not a hopeless case, however.

San Jose and Idaho could both be improved, but a rise beyond the middle of the pack is unlikely.

All Boise needs is the right balance of X's and O's and recruiting in the coaching position to take off. While we always get quality football coaches, our track record for hoops isn't near as good. Coach Graham may be that guy, he's sure got the system but we haven't won many recruiting wars before this year's class. We actually beat out a few good programs for our kids this year. We'll see if it's a start to something big or not.

We've got the facility and the fan base waiting for a winner. We aren't hopeless for sure, but we've got a ways to go still. In the meantime we will continue to be a pest in hoops that can win any WAC game we're in.

Updates:

Boise: got a commit from Kenny Wilson, 6-4 SG from McLennan CC, San Antonio, TX

Hawai'i: Jack Miller III, 6-2 G, St. Louis HS, Hawai'i, will walk on

Nevada: Jeremy Mayfield will attend prep school and will not be coming to Nevada for 2005-06. He was close to qualifying (needed a little higher GPA OR a little better test score). Has said he does not want to reopen recruiting...hopefully will be in Reno for 2006-07.

I know Boise has swept Idaho the last four years in basketball, so accept that as my immediate disclaimer. But this sentence cracks me up.

"All we need is better coaching and recruits, and we'll take off..."

Yeah. That usually covers it.

On top of Idaho's recruiting class, we add two new assistant coaches to the program that are solid upgrades from the previous guys in their positions (who were good guys, just didn't work out). Here are the press releases:
