I was reviewing the list of games that will be nationally televised this year at the following link and I noticed that the W.A.C. and the Mtn. West Conference are almost identical in the number of nationally televised games this season. I came up with a count of 20 games for the Mtn. West and 19 games for the W.A.C.

<a href='http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/Features/TV.htm' target='_blank'>Nationally televised football games this season</a>

THE W.A.C.

Fresno State will have six nationally televised games.

Boise State will have four nationally televised games (other than the MPC bowl game which they may or may not be at this year).

Hawai'i will have three nationally televised games.

Nevada will have two nationally televised games.

New Mexico State will have two nationally televised games.

Louisiana Tech will have one nationally televised game.

San Jose State will have one nationally televised game.

Idaho and Utah State have no nationally televised games.

THE MTN. WEST

Air Force will have four nationally televised games.

New Mexico will have three nationally televised games.

T.C.U. will have three nationally televised games.

Colorado State will have three nationally televised games.

Utah will have three nationally televised games (after the season they had last year????)

BYU will have two nationally televised games (after the season THEY had last year??)

UNLV will have one nationally televised game.

San Diego State will have one nationally televised game.

Wyoming will have no nationally televised games this season.

Considering that both conferences have only nine schools each, and the "perceived" (or delusional) nationall assumption that the Mtn. West is "superior" to the W.A.C. it is fairly amazing to me that these two conferences have virtually identical appearances on national television this season. Just think what it will be like in 2006 when the Mtn. West goes off to obscurity with their CSTV deal. :D

That's not really accurate, although numbers can be viewed in a light that still supports your argument.

The ABC broadcasts are regional, not national, and I'm assuming the Fox broadcasts are too.

Here's how it compares network-by-network:
Broadcast games (+conference matchups)=total appearances

National
ESPN: WAC 3(+1)=4 MWC 4(+3)=7
ESPN2: WAC 6(+1)=7 MWC 3(+2)=5
TBS: WAC 1 MWC 1
NBC: WAC 0 MWC 1
CSTV: WAC 0 MWC 3

Regional
ABC: WAC 2(+2)=4 MWC 5(+2)=7
Fox: WAC 3 MWC 0
ESPN Plus: WAC 0 MWC 8(+8)=16

So, if you subtract the limited-distribution CSTV broadcasts, the national appearances are WAC=12 MWC=14.

Screw the MWC.....

Funny....how the MWC didn't schedule Boise and Fresno in OOC games. Boise is 9-0 against the MWC. 04-bow

The horrible part is that despite an almost relatively even number of national broadcasts, the MWC is going to be making like 7x more money than the WAC, at least in terms of TV dollars.

You may be right, but I do not see how you can say that CSTV is "national"......yes, I guess in some sense they must be but WHO gets it? I sure don't.

P.S. Yo, UTEPDallas, Boise State is 8-0 vs. the Mtn. West in football......not 9-0. But you were close. :D

I just broke down the games as the MWC website listed them (see link). I agree that calling CSTV "national" broadcasts is misleading at best...at least at this point. That's why I subtracted them.

<a href='http://themwc.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/060905aaa.html' target='_blank'>MWC football schedule</a>

BTW, we got word today that the WAC will produce two Nevada games (one home & one away). Any idea whether that is the case for the other schools as well (I'm kind of assuming it is)?

But doesn't the win against TCU in the Fort Worth Bowl count as a MWC win now? :bluethumb:

From the Albuquerque Journal (6-10-05):

The MWC released its projected TV schedule Thursday and the Liberty Bowl is not on it. The schedule has 28 national or regional TV games . . . MWC expects to add more games in the next month and will release a full TV schedule at its annual football media day July 18 in San Diego.

I suspect the reason why the Liberty Bowl is not on the Mtn. West Conference TV schedule is because their contract with the Liberty Bowl expired or something like that. I seem to recall them saying that both parties (the MWC & the Liberty Bowl) were looking at other options.

I think the MWC worked out an agreement with the new (2nd) bowl game in San Diego in part to replace the Liberty Bowl. The Liberty Bowl destination (Memphis, TN.) was certainly less than popular in the MWC.

I heard NMSU at Hawaii was trying to be worked into TV. with a total of 3 running plays between both teams for the entire game, it should make for some entertainment.... and some changes in some record books.
