Basketball analysis, as of 1-16-07
Coming off the frustrating performance at Virginia Tech, the Heels stand at 15-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. We've got one OOC game left - at Arizona, seven conference home games, and seven conference road games.
So far, I think we've been okay. Last Saturday was a setback, but I expected some road struggles in the earlygoing. The fact that we've had one true road game before VT - against an average St. Louis team - told me that we weren't mentally ready to face a tough road test against a good team. It was a rude awakening for our guys, and they didn't respond until it was too late in the game. Still, I think it says something that they fought back and made it a game at the end. I'm not satisfied with the outcome or the effort, but I'm encouraged that the guys kept fighting and got themselves back in the game.
From here, I think we really need a road victory tomorrow at Clemson. It hasn't exactly been kind to us - it seems like we win only about half of our games there lately - but it's doable. Hopefully the guys are adjusted to the road atmosphere in the ACC and will respond with an effort like dook's at Miami this past Sunday. I'm not necessarily saying they need a dominating win, but they need to play smarter on offense and get back to playing suffocating defense. If they do that, they should be in good shape.

A win for us in Chapel Hill would really right our shaky ship quite nicely....

I'm scared of Tech ever since that game last year. We had no business winning that game.

Looks like Roy took care of what needed to be addressed. They still had to many t/o's but credit Clemsons quicks for that. The defense was impressive. I REALLY wish Roy would give Danny the minutes he gives Terry. I love Dannys game. He is sooo smart. Terry is like a deer in headlights out there.

I was really impressed with the defensive effort last night. We were all over the place on D, and Clemson rarely got any open looks. It helped that they couldn't throw it in the ocean. Clemson would be a really good team if they could shoot worth a lick.
We turned it over a little too much for my taste - Clemson got a lot of fastbreak easy buckets off those. We also need to learn to pump-fake and ball-fake when we go up against a team as aggressive on defense as Clemson. Tyler did it one time and two guys went flying by him. You have to know your opponent and know how to turn their strengths into weaknesses.
Other than that, though, it was a great road win. We really need to follow that up with a home win against Tech to separate ourselves from the pack a little.
