That's YOUR hang-up, not that of the big majority of NIU alums and students who are football fans. NIU doesn't - on the whole - compete with Notre Dame, Illinois or the other Big 10 schools in football. It just doesn't. And this fact has no correlation to any inferiority complex you feel. No shame in being a quality mid-major football conference and team.

In the past decade it really has not been a competition, NIU has had far more success than ND and Illinois. You cant really throw ND and Illinois in there with other Big 10 teams like OSU and Michigan, those programs have had more success than NIU.
How many conference championships has NIU won in the last decade? Zero. Illinois? Zero. Notre Dame? Well yeah, that has to be zero.

How many BCS bowls has NIU been two? Zero. Illinois? One. Notre Dame? Three.

Notre Dame has had more success then NIU, and it's not even close. Illinois? Closer.

Illinois has 1 Big Ten title (2001) and 2 BCS bowls ('02 Sugar and '08 Rose) in the past decade. You were one short on both counts.

I was a student for a 10-2 year and a 1-11 year...very, um, odd. That probably doesn't happen often.

Then NIU hasn't had even close to as much success in the last decade than either of them.
